Skalhamn combines the characteristic coastal scenery of Bohuslän with a specific hiking section and a harbour whose pier is partly made of worked granite. Large rock formations and the Blötan nature area lie around the village; grasslands can be found between the granite hills. For planning your trip, the landscape, Kuststigen and the village itself offer different points of focus. You can shape your stay around whether you want to hike, take in the coastal scenery, or explore the harbour and buildings.

Coastal Scenery and the Village

Large rock formations and Blötan are part of the landscape around Skalhamn, as are the grasslands between the granite hills. This combination gives the coastal scenery a variety of forms: alongside rocky areas are open grasslands. The surroundings are therefore not defined by granite and rock alone; the areas between the hills also shape the character of the Bohuslän coast.

The village’s character includes older wooden houses built on torpargrund foundations, standing alongside newly built villas. Older and newer buildings can thus be found in the same village. If you are interested in built environments, Skalhamn offers another facet beyond its scenery: the mix of wooden houses and villas.

Hiking the Kuststigen

The Kuststigen includes a section from Lysekil to Skalhamn. It is about 12.5 kilometres long and hilly and rocky in places. The distance and terrain answer different planning questions: the kilometre figure indicates the approximate length, while the hilly and rocky sections describe the character of the route. If you plan to hike this section, take both its approximate length and the path conditions into account.

The wider route of the Kuststigen also provides a regional context: sections 10–16 pass through the entire municipality of Lysekil, from Dragsmark/Fiskebäckskil in the south to Brodalen/Nordens Ark in the north. The hiking section to Skalhamn is part of a route that crosses the municipality from south to north. The approximately 12.5 kilometres, by contrast, refer specifically to the section from Lysekil to Skalhamn.

Harbour and History

The pier in Skalhamn’s harbour is partly made of large granite blocks, carefully hewn with a sense of form. Here, granite appears not only as part of the coastal scenery but also as a crafted material in the harbour. The lighthouse on Gäven was completed in 1917. The pier and lighthouse offer two distinct historical points of reference for the village: stoneworking and a coastal structure with a specific date.

A local tradition is also among Skalhamn’s cultural features. A description from 2017 reports that the local sauna association continues the Easter bonfire tradition.
