Istorp brings together open landscapes, stone walls and forests with the Viskan river, horse-riding activities and historic buildings. Those looking to combine nature and culture on their trip will find a range of themes here: birdwatching, activities with horses, and the history of a medieval church and a watermill. There are also opportunities to visit a working farm or include a group-oriented forest programme in your plans.

Landscape, the Viskan and birdwatching

Open landscapes, beautiful stone walls and forests define Istorp; the Viskan flows through the area. Istorp attracts birdwatchers and rare bird species every year. The Viskan fishing area includes the Lillån as far as Fävren within Marks Municipality, as well as Lilla Eksjö and Gravsjö in Istorp. The fishing information dates from 2018; check the current regulations and access conditions before fishing. This lets you consider nature watching and fishing as separate interests when planning, without combining them into a single experience.

Horse experiences and riding activities

Ridskolehästar offers private riding lessons on its horses in Istorp. The offer also includes basic horse care: beginners learn to brush, saddle and tack up, and are accompanied on their first ride. Guided rides in the forest, also suitable for beginners, are available too. For riders with their own horses, Ridskolehästar offers training in dressage, groundwork and show jumping. This clearly distinguishes riding lessons on the provider’s horses from training with your own horse.

Fagerhults Häst offers trail rides, riding lessons, weekend courses and opportunities to spend time with horses. Horse experiences there are limited to one or two guests per appointment. If you are planning for a specific number of people, bear this limit in mind when choosing a time and confirm the specific availability with the provider in advance.

Church and watermill history

Istorp Church was built in the early Middle Ages; medieval walls form part of the present building. An old route is also associated with the church: the medieval road between Skara and Varberg ran between the church and the vicarage. Ekarebo Skvaltkvarn offers a different historic landmark. The restored watermill lies in the forest by the Ekån, was originally built in 1800 and was moved downstream in 1841. Of the 19 mills that once operated in the area, it is the only one still standing. Together, the church and mill reveal different traces of the past: medieval building fabric and the history of a watermill.

Farms, group activities and cabins

Frugårdens Kött invites visitors to see the animals and experience a working farm; visitor arrangements may vary. The farm is organically certified, keeps suckler cows and raises the calves until slaughter. A local report from 2026 listed the farm shop as open on Fridays and beef and minced beef among its products. Check whether the shop is open and the products are available before visiting.

Skogens Hus offers companies and groups experiences and events in the forests of Istorp. Cabins right by the forest are also available for overnight stays; availability may vary. If you are considering a group programme or an overnight stay in a cabin, check the suitable offer and availability in advance. This lets you include these options in your travel plans without assuming that they can be combined in a particular way.
