Kungälv combines a historic wooden town with new districts and a modern travel centre. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, the Fontin nature reserve offers woodland, pastureland and Lake Svarte Mosse. Fontin is within easy walking distance of central Kungälv. The town’s history also offers many tangible points of interest, from the old town hall and the wooden town layout to buildings with a long history of construction.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

The Bohusleden Trail stretches for 370 kilometres between Lindome and Strömstad. Two of its 27 stages pass through Kungälv Municipality; the Fontin–Grandalen section is 19 kilometres long. These figures refer to different scales: the entire long-distance trail, its route through the municipality and a named section. This is useful when you want to include a specific distance in your plans.

Around Kungälv, five hiking trails in Svartedalen start at Bottenstugan, at the eastern end of Ålevattnet. They range from 1.9 to 4 kilometres in length. By comparison, the Fontin–Grandalen section is considerably longer, at 19 kilometres. Svartedalen is one of western Sweden’s largest contiguous coniferous forest areas and is ideal for hiking. The distances give you a concrete reference point when comparing shorter trails with a longer section of the Bohusleden.

Kastelgårdsskogen, a popular recreation area between Komarken and Ytterby, is also located around Kungälv. So, in addition to the trails in Svartedalen, there are other landscapes to choose from. In Fontin, woodland and pastureland meet Lake Svarte Mosse; the nature reserve is also within easy walking distance of the town centre. For a trip that includes hiking, both a named nature reserve and specific trail distances can help you plan.

Wooden Town and Cultural History

Kungälv’s old town centre is a well-preserved wooden town layout and is of national heritage interest. Västra Gatan and Torget formed the connecting route through the town, which was established in the late 17th century. Gamla rådhuset, the Old Town Hall, stands in Stora Torget and is a symbol of old Kungälv. The building was constructed between 1762 and 1767 and originally also housed the customs house. Its construction period and former function give the town hall a distinctive place in the town’s history.

The Baroque wooden church in central Kungälv is another point of interest in the town’s architectural history: construction began in 1679. Uddmanska huset at Västra Gatan 9 is one of Kungälv’s culturally significant buildings and dates from the late 18th century. Hembygdsgården on Fästningsholmen was once the town’s vicarage. In the winter of 1930–31, it was moved from Västra Gatan to its present location.

Bohus Fortress also offers a glimpse into the town’s earlier history. This medieval castle is associated with bloody sieges and power struggles. Guided tours are available, as is a self-guided tour via an app included with the admission ticket. Activities at the fortress also include archery and raft rides across the pond. As tours and activities are specific visitor offerings, it is a good idea to check what is currently available before your visit.

Exhibitions, Performances and More

Mimers Konsthall and Mimers Teater offer a changing programme of cultural events. The art gallery hosts, among other things, watercolour, ceramics and children’s exhibitions. The theatre presents performances, concerts, theatre, dance and lectures; the programme changes. At Mimers Café, you can enjoy fika or a light meal. The café’s offerings may change. These venues let you complement nature and history with a visit focused on art, the performing arts or a fika break.

Ragnhildsholmen, a well-known and frequently visited birdwatching area, is located around Kungälv. Nightingales and rosefinches are among the birds found there; the ruins of a castle also stand by the Nordre älv. If you are interested in birdwatching and history, you can explore both at this named location. Another archaeological site is Stora Smällen at Västra Porten in Ytterby: this Iron Age burial ground contains 160 archaeological features. Along the continuous path, information boards stand on the hill by the southern and northern cattle grids, which lead into the sheep pasture and to the burial ground.

For cyclists, the Kungälv cycling map shows cycle paths and roads suitable for cycling. For swimming, the municipality has six seaside bathing areas, two lakeside bathing areas, outdoor swimming pools and an indoor swimming pool. These figures refer to the municipality as a whole; the number of facilities may change if the municipal offering changes.

When planning your trip, you can focus on the historic town centre, hiking or cultural activities, and compare the trail distances mentioned with your plans. If you are looking for a hotel in Kungälv, these interests can help you get a sense of Kungälv as a destination and plan how to spend your time there.
