Marstrand: Fortress, Art and Hotels
Accommodation in Marstrand
Marstrand brings together fortress visits, contemporary art, a car-free island and hiking destinations in a setting of islands and sea. For planning, it is worth considering the different highlights: Carlsten’s Fortress offers a choice between exploring independently and taking a guided tour, Strandverket combines art with a historic fortress building, and the trails lead to various destinations. The town’s history as a free port and the influence of its spa resort era, still visible today, add to the picture. This lets you focus on the themes you want to shape your stay in Marstrand.
Fortress, Art and History
At Carlsten’s Fortress, you can explore the grounds on your own or as part of a guided tour. Strandverket presents contemporary art in an old 18th-century fortress on Marstrand. The contrast between contemporary art and historic fortress architecture makes Strandverket a different cultural point of interest from the fortress visit. The exhibition program runs each season from late March to late September. Exhibition details vary by season, and dates may change. If Strandverket is an important part of your plans, check the current exhibition information in advance.
Marstrand was a free port from 1775 to 1794. At the same time, the townscape preserves the strong influence of its spa resort era. The free-port period is a clearly dated historical point of reference, while the spa resort character remains visible in the townscape. Both perspectives help you understand the town’s history beyond a single attraction.
Nature Reserve and Hiking Trails
The Marstrand Nature Reserve includes Marstrandsön, Koön and the surrounding sea with its smaller islands. A five-kilometre hiking trail runs around Marstrand. On Marstrandsön, several trails lead, among other places, to a swimming spot at Svarte Udde. One route on the island leads to the Skallens fyr lighthouse, from where you can see where the Kattegat and Skagerrak meet. One trail offers a clear distance reference at five kilometres; others lead to a swimming spot or to the lighthouse, where the Kattegat and Skagerrak meet. The nature reserve also includes Koön and the surrounding sea; the hiking destinations mentioned, however, are on Marstrandsön.
Island Planning and Activities on the Water
Marstrandsön is a car-free island. The Marstrandsfärjan ferry runs between Koön and Marstrand. For your plans, this means taking the island’s car-free character into account and checking the ferry schedule and fares before your trip, as both may change.
Kayaking is another activity available on Marstrand: since 1979, Marstrandskajaker has been making, selling and renting kayaks. If you plan to rent one, check the current rental arrangements, as they may change.
