Nature and culture come together in Hildburghausen District: a continuous forest area lies within Thuringian Forest Nature Park, while Vessertal Biosphere Reserve helps shape the district’s landscape. Other highlights include an open-air museum, Heldburg Fortress and trails along the Werra. This offers a range of options for planning your trip—from scenery and outdoor activities to architectural history and the region’s past.

Landscapes and views

At Rodachaue Pasture Landscape, the roof of the observation platform offers panoramic views across the meadows. Konik horses and Heck cattle contribute to the development of a natural landscape here. The views and landscape management offer two different perspectives on the same natural area: the platform provides a view across the meadows, while the animals contribute to the landscape’s development.

The Thuringian Forest also helps define the district’s regional setting: a continuous forest area within Thuringian Forest Nature Park lies in Hildburghausen District, which is also an important part of the Thuringian Forest recreation region. Vessertal Biosphere Reserve also shapes the district. These connections provide a regional context for the landscape without conflating its different natural features.

Castles and museums

At Heldburg Fortress, the German Castle Museum presents the history and culture of castles in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its permanent exhibition is laid out as a tour through the entire fortress. Visitors learn how castle construction changed from one era to the next and get to know Heldburg Fortress. European architectural history and the specific building itself thus offer two perspectives on this tour.

Henneberg Museum Kloster VeĂźra is a six-hectare open-air museum. Its four themed areas cover the history of the monastery, half-timbered architecture, everyday life in the Henneberg region, and agricultural technology and sustainability. The scope ranges from the history of a monastery to questions of building, daily life and agriculture.

The Natural History Museum is located in the residence palace of the Counts of Henneberg. The history of the ruling dynasty and the castle is of particular importance. A vaulted room contains knight’s armor and a two-handed sword, as well as large-scale secco murals depicting the story of Hercules, dating to around 1600. The room brings together armor and wall paintings from different areas of representation.

The Rodachtal Two-Country Museum opened in November 2009 and takes visitors on a journey through the 20th century in the Rodachtal border region. The preserved palace garden in Hildburghausen offers a different historical focus: it was laid out as a Baroque garden around 1700 and converted into a landscape park around 1780. The history of the border region and the transformation of a garden thus offer distinct ways of exploring the past.

Hiking, cycling and winter sports

The Mill Hiking Trail in the municipality of Straufhain is about seven kilometers long. It passes through an area where nine grain and sawmills once operated; information boards at the former mill sites provide details about them. The approximate length gives a clear indication of the route, while the boards focus on the history of the mill sites.

In the district, the Werra Valley Cycle Path runs through the Werra floodplains and is especially popular for cycling trips downstream. Hiking and cycling are also possible in the Werra Valley; water-based touring is another option downstream from Themar. The activities therefore differ not only in how you get around: the cycle path is associated with the Werra floodplains, while water-based touring is specifically mentioned for the stretch downstream from Themar.

In the municipality of Masserberg, including the districts of Heubach, Schnett and Fehrenbach, winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy cross-country ski trails totaling more than 70 kilometers, as well as numerous ski touring trails. The length and preparation of the cross-country ski trails can vary by season. Check these details before your trip if you plan to rely on them.
