Discover Henfstädt
Accommodation in Henfstädt
When you choose Henfstädt as your travel destination, local history and regional culture take center stage. Attractions include the village church and the local history room in the former rectory; the Hinteres Schloss, the Osterburg, and the Hain add to the picture. Each place offers a different focus: architectural history and tombs tell the story of the village’s past, while the Hain offers a scenic hiking destination.
Estate, church, and local history
The Zufraß estate, also known as Hinteres Schloss, lies in the west of Henfstädt. The two-story complex has a rectangular stair-tower projection. It dates from 1595 and was renovated in 1743; it is also in need of renovation. The original construction and later renovation mark different stages in the building’s history.
The village church has tombs dating from the 16th to the 18th century, including those of the Zufraß and von Hanstein families. Together with Hinteres Schloss, it offers a different perspective on local history: the tombs from several centuries and the names of the two families take center stage. The local history room in the former rectory is also one of the attractions. Check access arrangements before visiting.
Osterburg, Hain, and the Werra
The Osterburg and the Hain are part of the Obernitz estate in Henfstädt. The Osterburg is a notable castle ruin, while the Hain is an appealing hiking destination. These offer two different points of interest: a castle ruin and a place to go hiking. If you are interested in castle history, the Osterburg is the relevant local site; the Hain is the place to go for a hike.
Paddling on the Werra has been described as a tourist highlight in Henfstädt since 2004. Boat rental is also mentioned for Henfstädt. However, the restriction is decisive when planning: navigation on the Werra in the district of Hildburghausen is prohibited until further notice. The tourist designation and mention of boat rental do not override this ban. Check the current rules before planning water activities, and do not plan a trip on the Werra until the ban has been lifted.
More cultural and nature topics in the district of Hildburghausen
The district of Hildburghausen provides a wider regional setting for cultural and nature interests. The district includes an extensive, contiguous forest area in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park; the Vessertal Biosphere Reserve also shapes the region. These topics complement Henfstädt’s village history with a perspective on the district’s landscape.
You can explore a range of cultural attractions elsewhere in the district. The Henneberg Museum at Kloster Veßra is a six-hectare open-air museum. Its topics range from monastery history, half-timbered architecture, and everyday life in the Henneberg region to agricultural technology and sustainability. The German Castle Museum at Veste Heldburg presents the history and culture of castles in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. The permanent exhibition takes visitors on a tour of the entire fortress: visitors learn how castle construction changed from one era to the next and get to know Veste Heldburg.
Nature and hiking in the district also offer a variety of themes. In the Rodachaue grazing landscape, the roof of the observation platform offers panoramic views over the meadows; Konik horses and Heck cattle contribute to the development of a natural landscape there. The approximately seven-kilometer Mühlenwanderweg in the municipality of Straufhain passes through an area where nine grain and sawmills once operated. Information panels at the former mill sites provide information about the mills. This lets you choose between a trail with insights into milling history and a scenic destination overlooking the Rodachaue.
When planning your trip, you can choose Henfstädt for its local architectural and cultural monuments and add the other destinations mentioned in the district as distinct regional themes.
