Römhild: Castle History, Collections and Ceramics
Accommodation in Römhild
Römhild combines the history of the town and its castle with collections ranging from ancient artefacts to regional pottery. Toys and an annual ceramics event are also among the local highlights. When planning your trip, the museum’s opening hours and the market date are especially important.
Glücksburg Castle: Town History and Collections
The permanent exhibition at the Museum Schloss Glücksburg presents the history of the castle and the town, as well as notable figures. Other collections offer their own points of interest: the special collection of the Greek Mavrogordato family includes Roman and Greek antiquities, as well as artist’s and character dolls from the first half of the 20th century.
The Hönn Collection focuses on tools used in the region’s rural crafts and agriculture. In particular, it illustrates the history of pottery in Römhild. A toy exhibition includes dollhouses, dolls’ prams, toy shops and wooden toys from great-grandmother’s time. The castle brings together a range of perspectives: the history of the town and castle, regional working traditions, ancient artefacts and toys.
The museum’s annual programme includes concerts, readings, lectures, film screenings, special exhibitions and educational activities. Individual events may vary; check the dates that suit your trip.
The Cemetery Church in Römhild
The Cemetery Church was built between 1708 and 1712 on the orders of Duke Heinrich. Master builder Christian Richter used mainly materials from the demolished pleasure palace “Merzelbach”. The church’s exterior is plain, while its interior is designed in a restrained late Renaissance style.
The furnishings include an altarpiece painted by court painter Dupree. It depicts Duke Heinrich and his wife kneeling before the crucified Christ. There are also wooden memorial plaques and inscribed grave slabs made of sandstone and cast material. The period of construction, reused materials and preserved furnishings each give the church building its own historical significance.
