Discover Eisfeld: Castle, Museum and Town History
Accommodation in Eisfeld
Eisfeld brings together medieval architecture, collections on local history and a traditional festival. This gives you different starting points for planning your trip: you can get to know the town through its castle complex, exhibitions, historic buildings and the Kuhschwanzfest. Other topics in Hildburghausen district provide a separate regional context.
Castle, Museum and Town History in Eisfeld
At its core, Schloss Eisfeld is a medieval castle complex and today houses the town museum. The museum collections range from an extensive porcelain exhibition and historic demonstration workshops to toys, town history and regional folklore. Alongside the town's history, the focus is also on crafts and everyday life through the ages.
A special exhibit is the Steinmärbelmühle from Truckenthal. It dates from 1867 and will be on display again in the permanent exhibition from 2024. The Otto Ludwig memorial site is located in the Ludwig family’s summer house, built in 1814. It holds collections on the life and work of the poet and musician Otto Ludwig, who was born in Eisfeld in 1813.
The town’s long history can also be seen in individual buildings beyond the exhibitions. Built in 1575 and later extended, the school building is considered the second-oldest school building in Thuringia. Above the town hall’s round entrance portal is a sandstone coat-of-arms relief carved in 1557. These dates mark different historical reference points: from the 16th-century school building and the town hall relief to the summer house from the early 19th century.
Traditional Festival Procession and a Nearby Excursion Destination
The traditional programme of the Eisfeld Kuhschwanzfest includes an early-morning wake-up call, a historic guard parade with a fire brigade exercise, the commander’s ride and the festival procession. The sequence brings together ceremonial elements and a parade, giving the festival its distinctive profile rooted in tradition.
Nearby is the Märbelmühle Sachsenbrunn in Sachsenbrunn, about 4 kilometres from Eisfeld. Opening hours and guided tours are available by arrangement, so coordinate your visit with the operator.
Hildburghausen District: Culture and Landscape
Hildburghausen district is an important part of the Thuringian Forest recreational region. It includes a continuous forest area in Thuringian Forest Nature Park; the district is also shaped, among other things, by Vessertal Biosphere Reserve. At Hutelandschaft Rodachaue, the roof of the observation shelter offers panoramic views across the meadows. Konik horses and Heck cattle contribute to the development of a landscape that is close to nature.
The district also offers distinct cultural themes. Hennebergisches Museum Kloster VeĂźra is a six-hectare open-air museum with four areas: monastic history, half-timbered architecture and everyday life in the Henneberger Land, as well as agricultural technology and sustainability. The German Castle Museum at Veste Heldburg presents the history and culture of European castles from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its permanent exhibition is laid out as a tour through the entire fortress and shows how castle construction changed from one era to the next.
The surviving palace garden in Hildburghausen also tells a story of change: laid out as a Baroque garden around 1700, it was transformed into a landscape park around 1780. The district thus brings together different historical perspectives, from castle and monastery history to the development of a garden.
Routes and Activities in the District
The approximately 7-kilometre MĂĽhlenwanderweg in the municipality of Straufhain passes through an area where nine grain and sawmills once operated. Information boards at the former sites provide details about the mills. In the municipality of Masserberg, including the districts of Heubach, Schnett and Fehrenbach, winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy cross-country ski trails covering more than 70 kilometres in total, as well as numerous ski touring routes. Trail lengths and grooming may vary by season.
The district offers a range of options for cycling and hiking tours: the Werratal cycle path runs through the Werra floodplains and is particularly used for cycling downstream. The Werra Valley is suitable for hiking and cycling; downstream from Themar, it is also possible to go canoeing. Route details refer to the specific routes and areas mentioned.
