Straufhain: Festivals, Museums and Trails
Accommodation in Straufhain
Straufhain offers several specific starting points for planning a stay: recurring festivals, museums covering regional and transport history, and hiking and cycling trails. The options differ mainly in their dates and themes. If you want to plan around a festival, check the seasons; for museum visits, it is important to follow each museum’s visiting rules. The trails, meanwhile, can be assessed by their starting points, route details and historical themes.
Festivals Throughout the Year
The Kühbergfest takes place every year in August in Eishausen. Its program includes music, food from the bakehouse and grill, exhibitions and market stalls. The Berglochfest is held every year on the last Sunday in May in the district of Steinfeld, in the immediate vicinity of the Bergloch. The two recurring festivals therefore take place at different times of year: the Berglochfest has a fixed Sunday in May, while the Kühbergfest takes place in August. Check the current event dates when planning your visit.
Museums and History
The Zweiländermuseum Rodachtal in Streufdorf presents the regional history of a border region. It opened in November 2009 and takes visitors on a journey through the 20th century in the Rodachtal. The Bahnhofsmuseum in Seidingstadt has a different focus: it tells the story of the Thuringian narrow-gauge railway from Hildburghausen via Heldburg to Friedrichshall. Visits to the Bahnhofsmuseum are possible only by prior appointment. Arrange your visit with the museum before you arrive.
Hiking and Cycling Trails
The Mühlenwanderweg is about 7 km long, with starting points in Adelhausen, Steinfeld and Stressenhausen. An information board is located at each starting point. The history of the mills also shapes how visitors see the Rodachtal in the municipality of Straufhain: there were nine mills there. Today, almost all that remains of the historic mills are waterworks such as mill races and weirs; information boards at the former sites describe the earlier facilities.
For a cycling tour, the Werra-Obermain-Radweg lists a sequence of places along its route: it runs via Hildburghausen (Markt), Stressenhausen, Streudorf, Heldburg, Lindenau, Gemünda, Seßlach, Kaltenbrunn and Wiesen. As the route may change, check its current course before setting out.
Cultural Attractions in Hildburghausen District
Hildburghausen District also offers a range of cultural and historical themes. The German Castle Museum at Veste Heldburg presents the history and culture of castles in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. The permanent exhibition is laid out as a tour through the entire fortress. Visitors learn how castle architecture changed from one era to the next and discover Veste Heldburg.
The Hennebergisches Museum Kloster Veßra offers a different focus. The 6-hectare open-air museum covers four thematic areas: monastic history, half-timbered architecture and everyday life in the Henneberg region, as well as agricultural technology and sustainability. These themes provide a distinct regional perspective alongside the festivals, museums and trails in Straufhain.
