Fehrenbach: Fehrenbacher Schweiz and Culture
Accommodation in Fehrenbach
If you are looking for a hotel in Fehrenbach, Fehrenbacher Schweiz is a specific natural attraction in the village. You can find more hiking, scenic-viewpoint and cultural topics in the wider destination of Masserberg. The different local references help you identify Fehrenbach as a search destination and clearly distinguish it from regional topics.
Fehrenbach: Rock Formation and Werra Spring
Fehrenbacher Schweiz is a distinctive natural landscape featuring impressive rock formations made of conglomerate stone. This makes a named landscape formation the focus in Fehrenbach, distinct from the other natural features of the surrounding area. The Werra rises in the forest between Fehrenbach and Masserberg, near Zeupelsberg. The spring is therefore located between the two villages and is a separate point of interest in the landscape.
Fehrenbacher Schweiz is also associated with a well-known name in cultural terms: folk music composer Herbert Roth, who wrote the Rennsteiglied, wrote a song about this landscape. The natural landscape and the song thus offer two different ways to experience Fehrenbach—through its striking conglomerate rocks and their cultural resonance.
Masserberg: Church and Artwork
In the wider destination of Masserberg, the Evangelical Mountain Church tells its own local story. The present-day church was consecrated on October 9, 1883, after the previous church on the site was destroyed in a fire in 1880. The two dates mark the destruction of the previous building and the consecration of the present-day church.
The “Masserberger Christkönig” has been in the Evangelical Mountain Church in Masserberg since the third Sunday of Advent in 1980. Greiz sculptor Elly-Viola Nahmmacher carved the artwork from a lime tree trunk. It is 3 m high and 2.65 m wide. The church thus brings together a historic site and a later installation of an artwork with clearly specified dimensions.
Hiking and Views in Masserberg
Masserberg is located directly on the Rennsteig and is surrounded by forest meadows as well as beech and spruce forests. Numerous well-marked hiking trails and the Rennsteig make it possible to hike through Thuringian Forest Nature Park. Along the ridge, you can enjoy easy walks in various directions with only slight changes in elevation, or take a horse-drawn carriage ride. Masserberg therefore offers both walking routes and carriage rides as different ways to explore the area.
Another landmark is the Rennsteigwarte on 842 m-high Eselsberg. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Thuringian Forest and its foothills. The present-day Rennsteigwarte was built in 1974. Two earlier wooden towers had been destroyed: one was brought down by a storm in 1951, and the other was destroyed by lightning in 1974.
Masserberg’s hiking options also include the barefoot trail created by the tourism association. It leads over natural forest soil, sharp wood chips, wooden tree slices and soft moss. In the wider region around Masserberg, there is a small playground for younger visitors just behind the Turmbaude at the Rennsteigwarte.
It is helpful to distinguish between the destinations when choosing where to search: Fehrenbacher Schweiz and Herbert Roth’s song are associated with Fehrenbach; the church, Rennsteigwarte and the hiking options described here belong to the destination of Masserberg. This lets you give the different nature, cultural and hiking topics the emphasis you want when planning your trip.
