Suhl offers a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: small arms and vehicle history, porcelain, astronomy, theater and hiking. If you are looking for a hotel in Suhl, the focus of your stay can help you choose. The museums each have their own emphasis, while the planetarium and observatory offer two different ways to explore astronomy.

Suhl Museums: Craftsmanship and Vehicle Manufacturing

The Suhl Weapons Museum showcases nearly 600 years of Suhl’s small-arms manufacturing tradition across three floors. A dedicated section covers porcelain production in Suhl, which played an important role between 1861 and 1930. The museum therefore covers both the long history of small-arms manufacturing and a clearly defined period of porcelain production.

The Suhl Vehicle Museum displays around 220 exhibits from all areas of vehicle manufacturing across an exhibition space of 1,100 m². These include original Simson motorcycles on which European and world champions won their titles, as well as the legendary Greifzu racing car. The broad vehicle-manufacturing exhibition and its specific connections to championship titles and motor racing provide a different focus from the history of weapons and porcelain.

Planetarium and Observatory: Two Ways to Explore Astronomy

The 8-meter dome of the Suhl Planetarium can accommodate up to 56 visitors. The Zeiss “Skymaster” small planetarium projects around 6,000 fixed stars, as well as the movements of the Sun, Moon and planets. The observatory, by contrast, offers observations with expert guidance, using a 40-cm Cassegrain reflecting telescope and an 11-cm refractor. These offer two different focal points to consider when choosing: projected views of the sky in the planetarium and guided observations using the instruments listed at the observatory.

Theater and Shooting Sports Center

At the Suhl Marionette Theater, visitors can enjoy an up-close experience of marionette theater and performers from near and far. The Suhl International Shooting Sports Center offers visits, guided tours and shooting sessions by prior arrangement. If you are planning a visit or tour, register in advance and check current availability. The theater and shooting sports center thus offer two additional, distinctly different activities to choose from.

Hiking Around Suhl

Suhl is close to the Rennsteig. The Herbert Roth Hiking Trail is a panoramic trail around Suhl, the hometown of Herbert Roth. The Suhl Planet Trail is another hiking route in the Suhl area. This provides different points of reference for planning: proximity to the Rennsteig, a trail specifically described as a panoramic route around the city, and another hiking route associated with Suhl.

Take Closed Attractions into Account When Planning
