Beach, Promenade and Harbours

In Haffkrug, the fishing experience trail runs along the promenade. Information boards and interactive features explain the history of fishing and the fish species of the Baltic Sea. You can explore the trail independently; at eight stops, QR codes provide access to stories and accounts from an audio guide. A walk therefore offers insights into the region’s fishing history and marine life.

Niendorf, a district of the municipality of Timmendorfer Strand, attracts many visitors with its fishing and yacht harbours. These two types of harbour shape the visitor experience there. The fishing experience trail in Haffkrug focuses on the history of fishing and the fish species of the Baltic Sea.

Nature Trails and Outdoor Activities

The Eutin Lake Circular Trail runs partly right along the shore of the Great Eutin Lake and partly on natural paths through the forest. Along the way, there are views of Eutin, Eutin Castle and the castle gardens. The stretches along the shore and the forest paths offer different landscape impressions; the viewpoints also take in the town and its distinctive buildings.

On Fehmarn, a one-kilometre nature trail at the Wallnau Waterbird Reserve leads through the nature reserve. At Bungsberg, you can hike, cycle, observe wildlife and discover nature. An observation platform is located on the Bungsberg telecommunications tower, 42 metres above the mast. If you plan to visit it, check in advance whether visits are possible.

The Natureum Steinwarder Nature Experience Park in Heiligenhafen allows children and adults to experience nature with all their senses. In SĂĽsel, the water-ski cableway offers beginner courses every day; if you are planning a visit, it is advisable to check the current times. The Ostsee Therme Scharbeutz combines a varied aquatic world and large water slides with a sauna area featuring eleven different saunas. It also offers direct access to the beach. As facilities and operations may change, check the latest information if particular offerings are important to your visit.

Performances, Museums and History

Every summer, the Eutin Festival stages various operas and operettas as open-air performances. The Ostholstein Museum in Eutin presents changing exhibitions as well as a permanent exhibition about Eutin in its heyday around 1800. The town thus offers both open-air performances that vary from year to year and a permanent exhibition theme.

Eutin Castle Museum is located right beside the Great Eutin Lake and is surrounded by a landscaped garden. During the winter season, Cismar Monastery in the municipality of Grömitz hosts concerts in its vaulted hall; it also holds changing exhibitions. The different exhibitions and concerts give the cultural programme distinct seasonal highlights: the festival takes place in summer, while the concerts in Cismar are held during the winter season.

In Oldenburg in Holstein, the Oldenburg Wall is one of Schleswig-Holstein’s most significant archaeological monuments. Using excavation finds and reconstructions, the Oldenburg Wall Museum presents the archaeologically and historically reconstructed story of the Oldenburg ring fortification and the Slavs in Ostholstein. In Lensahn, the Museum Farm displays more than 4,600 historical exhibits about work in the countryside and rural life in the past. Together, these places offer insights into archaeological finds, reconstructions and the history of everyday rural life.
