Altenkrempe lies between the Baltic Sea and Holstein Switzerland. Historic buildings, cultural events and a designated natural area give the destination a variety of distinctive features. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these themes can help you match your choice of location to your travel interests.

Architectural History and Gut Hasselburg

The basilica was built before its first documented mention in 1197. Its furnishings include a 13th-century bronze baptismal font, an altar from the mid-18th century and a Sauer organ dating from 1901. The furnishings thus bring together periods that differ considerably.

Gut Hasselburg is an 18th-century estate complex in Altenkrempe and serves as a venue for concerts by the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. The symmetrical complex comprises two barns, two cavalier houses, a gatehouse and a manor house. The manor house contains a Baroque hall with illusionistic ceiling paintings. The thatched barn is used for cultural events and music productions.

Visits and Event Dates

Tours for small groups at the Hasselburger Mill can be arranged by appointment; confirm the arrangements in advance. The annual Mill Day includes a guided introduction to the mill and its technology. Since the event calendar may change, check the date before planning your visit around it. The options differ in how you plan your time: for a small-group tour, the agreed appointment is the priority; for Mill Day, it is the event date.

A designated accessible parking space is available nearby at the Gut Hasselburg concert venue. Since parking regulations may change, check the current parking situation before your visit.

Gut Sierhagen and Palmenhaus Café

Gut Sierhagen was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. The Palmenhaus Café is located right next to the old Sierhagen estate nursery and offers on-site parking. The menu includes homemade cakes and tarts, as well as light savoury dishes. Gluten-free, vegan or lactose-free alternatives may be available on request. Food and dietary options may change, as may parking availability. If a particular selection is important to you, enquire in advance; also check the current parking situation.

Kremper Au and Natural Area

The Kremper Au is a 191-hectare protected Natura 2000 site (FFH). The designated landscape includes a large area of lowland grassland near Altenkrempe, flowing waters, spring habitats, beech forest and alder-ash alluvial forest. These habitats therefore range from grassland and springs to woodland and waterways. This natural area gives the destination a different focus from its historic estates and cultural events.

A Broader Look at Ostholstein

The wider travel destination of Ostholstein also offers distinctive cultural attractions. Every summer, the Eutin Festival presents a different selection of operas or operettas as open-air performances. The Ostholstein Museum in Eutin features changing exhibitions as well as a permanent exhibition about Eutin at the height of its prosperity around 1800. Exhibitions at Cismar Monastery in the municipality of Grömitz change, and concerts are also held in the vaulted hall during the winter months. The regional cultural calendar therefore varies by season and theme: summer stage performances sit alongside winter concerts, while the museum offers a mix of changing and permanent exhibitions.
