Those looking for hotels in Süsel can get a sense of the place through its waterways, bathing spots and local theatrical tradition. Süsel is connected to the landscape of Holstein Switzerland, characterised here by hills, attractive lakes and flowing waters. Nature and water are therefore as much in focus as the town’s specific cultural offerings.

Water, nature and getting to Süsel

Süsel Lake and the gravel pit lake are popular fishing spots. There are five bathing spots in the village areas of Süsel and Middelburg. Fishing and swimming therefore offer different ways to plan your holiday days. Conditions for bathing and using the water may vary; check the conditions for each location before your visit.

The water-ski cableway in Süsel also offers daily beginner courses. As operating hours may change, check the latest information on course times before your visit.

To get there, take the A1 from Hamburg towards Oldenburg; the Eutin exit is near Haffkrug. Check current road conditions before setting off. This information describes an approach route, but not a route within the town: for planning purposes, it is enough to take the exit and current road conditions into account.

Theatrical tradition in Süsel

At the Kulturscheune, the amateur theatre group De fidelen Süseler maintains an established local theatrical tradition. Each year, the group stages Low German plays or comedies, as well as a Christmas fairy tale. The programme thus ranges from Low German theatre to a performance at Christmas time. The annual programme may change; if you would like to plan your stay around a theatre visit, check the dates for the period in question.

Ostholstein as the wider region

Across the wider destination of Ostholstein, cultural offerings are spread across different places and seasons. Every summer, the Eutin Festival stages different operas or operettas outdoors. The Ostholstein Museum in Eutin presents changing exhibitions as well as a permanent exhibition about Eutin during its heyday around 1800. In the winter half of the year, Cismar Monastery in the municipality of Grömitz hosts concerts in its vaulted hall. The regional cultural calendar therefore offers a range of options: summer performances, exhibitions and winter concerts. Check specific event dates before your trip.

The wider Ostholstein region also offers landscapes ranging from coastline to nature trails. A nearly seven-kilometre stretch of fine sandy beach connects Haffkrug and Scharbeutz. The Eutin Lake Circular Trail runs partly right along the shore of Lake Eutin and partly on natural paths through the forest; along the way, there are views of Eutin, Eutin Castle and the castle gardens. On Fehmarn, a one-kilometre nature trail in the Wallnau Waterbird Reserve passes through the nature reserve. These examples each have their own character: beach, lakeshore and forest path sit alongside a trail through a protected area.

Ostholstein also offers opportunities to explore history. The Oldenburger Wall in Oldenburg in Holstein is one of Schleswig-Holstein’s most significant archaeological monuments. Using excavation finds and reconstructions, the Oldenburger Wall Museum presents the archaeologically and historically reconstructed history of the Oldenburg ring fortification and the Slavs in Ostholstein.
