Schashagen: Forests, Cliffs and Sandy Beaches
Accommodation in Schashagen
Schashagen’s landscape, within the Bay of Lübeck, brings together green forests, expansive fields, steep coastal cliffs and flat sandy beaches. The contrast between cliffs and sandy beaches shapes the town’s coastal scenery. When planning your trip, it helps to first consider whether beach time, nature experiences or activities matter most.
Beach and Activities in Schashagen
The 5 km-long natural beach in Bliesdorf lies within the municipality of Schashagen and is protected by coastal cliffs. The seabed slopes gently at the water’s edge. The beach is suitable for family outings and seaside walks; no visitor’s tax is charged.
Cycling, hiking and horse riding are land-based activities, while sailing and surfing take you onto the water. Golf adds to the selection, specifically at the 18-hole Brodauer MĂĽhle golf course. These activities are associated with Schashagen and its region throughout the year. You can therefore plan your trip around whether you would rather focus on exercise on land, water sports or golf.
More topics in the wider Ostholstein destination
In Ostholstein, cultural attractions in various locations add to the regional picture. In Eutin, the Eutin Festival stages different opera and operetta performances as open-air events every summer. The Ostholstein Museum in Eutin presents changing exhibitions as well as a permanent exhibition about Eutin during its heyday around 1800. Kloster Cismar, in the municipality of Grömitz, hosts changing exhibitions; concerts are held in the vaulted hall during the winter half-year. Their seasonal profiles differ: the festival takes place in summer, while the concerts in Cismar are held during the winter half-year.
Ostholstein’s archaeological history can also be explored in Oldenburg in Holstein. The Oldenburger Wall is one of Schleswig-Holstein’s most significant archaeological monuments. Using excavation finds and reconstructions, the Oldenburger Wall Museum presents the archaeologically and historically reconstructable history of the ring fortification and the Slavs in Ostholstein. The monument and the museum’s interpretation thus offer two distinct ways to explore the same historical subject.
Nature attractions in the wider Ostholstein destination also offer a range of experiences. The Wallnau Waterbird Reserve on Fehmarn has a one-kilometre nature trail through the nature reserve. At Bungsberg, visitors can hike, cycle, observe wildlife and explore nature. While Wallnau offers a specific trail through a protected area, Bungsberg has a range of nature-based activities. The Fehmarn Marine Centre offers a different maritime experience: it displays more than 1,000 marine animals in over 40 exhibition aquariums containing a total of 700,000 litres of seawater. The Eutin Lake circular trail runs partly along the shore of the Great Eutin Lake and partly on natural paths through the forest. Along the way, it offers views of Eutin, Eutin Castle and the castle gardens.
