Großenbrode is surrounded by water on three sides. The town combines its coastal setting with activities at South Beach, a nature trail and opportunities for cycling and water sports. If you are looking for a hotel, you can match these different highlights to your travel plans and consider which activities you would like to shape your stay.

South Beach: Promenade, Sports and Play

South Beach has a 1.5-kilometre promenade and a pier. There are beach volleyball and beach soccer courts. Free outdoor exercise equipment is available at the Aktiv-Point. Shallow water and sandbanks are suitable for small children.

The beach area includes KinderInsel, a play landscape next to the pier, and an adventure playground towards the mole. Play and recreation facilities may change; check their availability before your trip.

Water sports are also among the activities available in Großenbrode: you can consider SUP, kitesurfing and surfing. Board hire and taster courses are also offered; availability may vary by season. If these activities are important to your plans, check the conditions for your travel dates.

Nature Trail and Cycling Routes

The nature trail is a three-kilometre forest path with around 30 discovery stations. These include the sensory trail, “Path of the Senses”. The stations and the name give the trail a distinctive focus among Großenbrode’s nature activities.

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route passes through Großenbrode on its way to Fehmarn and back. The locally suggested cycling tours range from 24 to 35 kilometres and lead to Heiligenhafen, Sütel, Gut Görtz and Meeschendorf. Suggested routes may change; check the current route if needed.

The distances differ considerably for planning purposes: the nature trail is three kilometres long, while the suggested cycling tours are 24 to 35 kilometres. This lets you view a short forest walk and longer cycling tours as distinct activity options.

Harbours and Fishing

Großenbrode has six marinas with around 1,000 berths. As capacity may change, it is best to get up-to-date information if you are considering including a berth in your plans.

The Fehmarnsund is home to flatfish, eels, cod, sea trout, salmon and perch. Fishing is possible there. Regulations and the availability of different fish species may change; check the current rules before going fishing.

Dining on the Beach Promenade

The beach promenade offers fish rolls, crêpes, ice cream, cakes and restaurant meals. Vendors and food options may change seasonally. Großenbrode’s restaurants usually have Baltic Sea fish on their menus; restaurant menus may also change.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

You can reach Großenbrode by car via the A1 to Heiligenhafen and then the B207. Roadworks may temporarily change the route; check the road conditions before setting off.

Tourist information offices provide free brochures as well as cycling and hiking maps. Visitor services may change. If you need specific materials, ask about them in advance if necessary.

You can plan your stay around a short forest walk, longer cycling tours or the activities at South Beach, without treating these options as the same kind of holiday experience.
