If you are looking for a hotel in Steinfurt, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip. In the Steinfurt district of the MĂĽnsterland region, nature, cycling routes, and historical and cultural attractions take centre stage. The region is a diverse holiday destination with a park-like landscape: discover numerous manor houses, moated castles, monasteries and palaces.

Steinfurt

Nature and trails in the Steinfurt district

The Steinfurt district has 116 nature reserves covering a total area of around 13,231 hectares. There are also 78 landscape protection areas covering around 27,774 hectares. These area figures may change as new areas are designated. Together, the protected areas give an idea of the extent of protected landscapes in the district.

The twelve NaTourismus routes pass through almost all the towns and villages in the Steinfurt and Tecklenburg regions. They are between 25 and 54 kilometres long and are ideal for discovering the region’s diverse flora and fauna. Along the EmsRadweg, the protected riverbanks in the Steinfurt district offer special opportunities to experience nature.

Cycling and the Ems

Officially inaugurated in 2023, the Triangel is the Steinfurt district’s first cycle superhighway. It is around 62 kilometres long and offers fast, safe and comfortable cycling routes. The EmsRadweg runs for around 60 kilometres through the district. To compare route lengths, you can set these two figures alongside the 25-to-54-kilometre NaTourismus routes.

The Ems is also a destination for paddling: the stretch between Rheine and Salzbergen is an attractive canoeing area. Since May 2011, there has been a dedicated canoe landing stage right by Bentlage Monastery. There is also a hand-operated lock from the 19th century.

Culture and history

The former Kreuzherren monastery of Bentlage is located in a landscape protection area on the Ems in Rheine. It was founded in 1437 and converted into a manor house from 1803 onwards. Following careful restoration, the listed complex is now a cultural centre, museum, green retreat and popular destination for visitors from near and far. The dates mark two distinct chapters in the site’s history: its founding and its later conversion.

Near Rheine, the 100 Castles Route runs through the Ems valley. As a connecting route across the Steinfurt district, it links important architectural monuments. Steinfurt is also home to the HeinrichNeuyBauhausMuseum, dedicated to art and architecture. It exhibits works by Heinrich Neuy and other Bauhaus students and teachers in solo and group exhibitions.

The attractions each have a different focus: cycling routes and trails are described with specific lengths, Bentlage brings together several historical periods and a present-day cultural use, and the museum is devoted to the Bauhaus.
