Steinfurt

Cultural history between concert hall and moated castle

Steinfurt’s Concert Gallery was built in 1774, modelled on the Grand Trianon, the garden hall at Versailles, and is considered Europe’s oldest freestanding concert hall. It also hosts international artists. If you plan to attend a performance, check the dates before your trip.

Steinfurt Castle is a moated castle with Romanesque, Rococo and Neoclassical elements. The Burgsteinfurt Town Museum provides an overview of local history from the early Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century. Here, different perspectives complement one another: the castle and its architectural styles, and the museum’s broad historical overview of the town.

Bauhaus, blue-dyeing and the history of Borghorst

The Heinrich Neuy Bauhaus Museum exhibits works by Heinrich Neuy as well as by other Bauhaus students and teachers. These include designs and works of art, design and architecture. The museum thus offers insights into several areas of Bauhaus creativity rather than focusing on a single art form.

The Borghorst Heritage House features a corner shop, a spinning and weaving room, a pharmacy, a shoemaker’s workshop and a wooden-shoe workshop. Visits are possible only during special events or by prior arrangement. The blue-printing workshop explains various blue-dyeing techniques, displays the products and makes custom items on request.

Compare walking routes and a cycle route

The 4.2-kilometre “Borghorst Through the Ages” circular route leads to 17 stops with 19 information boards about how Borghorst has changed over the past century. Its shorter distance sets it apart from the 10.2-kilometre Mill Circular Route. This route passes through the historic old town of Burgsteinfurt, Bagno Park, over Buchenberg and through the farming community of Hollich. Along the way, it passes, among other places, the Lower Mill and the Hollich Windmill.

The 15.2-kilometre Concert Gallery Circular Route passes through the historic centre of Burgsteinfurt, Bagno Park and into the centre of Borghorst. It therefore takes in both of these town districts on a longer loop. Cyclists can also follow the MĂĽnsterland Cycle Path, which runs directly through Steinfurt on its more than 40-kilometre route from Rheine to Coesfeld.

A look at the Steinfurt district

For those who would also like to explore the wider region: the Steinfurt district has 116 nature reserves covering a total area of around 13,231 hectares, as well as 78 landscape conservation areas covering around 27,774 hectares.
