Altenberge brings together a range of attractions for a stay: cycling and hiking trails, a tree trail, a bridle path, as well as regional history and crafts. If you are looking for a hotel, focusing on your plans can make it easier to choose. If you want to spend time outdoors, different things will take priority than if you visit the local history museum or arrange a group visit in advance. The following options show which interests Altenberge caters to, so you can tailor your trip to your own reason for visiting rather than assuming there is just one itinerary.

Cycling and Hiking Trails in Altenberge

Many kilometers of cycling and hiking trails run around Altenberge and through the town. To help you plan, the citizens’ office offers seven routes as free cycling maps with route descriptions. If you are considering several routes, these maps can help you compare their descriptions before setting out.

The tree trail runs through Altenberge and takes about an hour. For walks or cycling tours, the octagonal wooden Dutch mill in Hansell is a worthwhile detour. From the Borndal viewpoint, you can see north toward the Teutoburg Forest.

The Inclusive Bridle Path

The Inclusive Bridle Path is 25 kilometers long. It has a firm, obstacle-free, wide surface and runs separately from traffic. There are parking spaces, tie-up rails, water troughs, paddocks and accessible riding facilities at five stations.

Regional History and Crafts

The local history museum in the granary presents regional history and culture. Audio guides are available for the exhibits; children can answer quiz questions and solve puzzles.

Haus Sieverding has been documented since the 14th century. The historic wooden shoe workshop describes the process from tree trunk to finished wooden shoe; its machines are fully operational.

Group Visits

Daytime town tours can be arranged for groups by prior appointment. Visits to Heimathues Kittken can also be arranged for groups during the day by prior appointment.

Steinfurt as a Broader Regional Perspective

For an additional perspective on the broader destination of Steinfurt: Steinfurt District in Münsterland is a varied holiday region with a parkland landscape, where numerous manor houses, moated castles, monasteries and palaces can be discovered. The Triangel was officially opened in 2023 and is around 62 kilometers long; as the district’s first veloroute, it offers fast, safe and comfortable cycling paths. Twelve NaTourismus routes pass through almost all the towns in the Steinfurt and Tecklenburg regions. They are between 25 and 54 kilometers long and are a great way to discover the diverse flora and fauna. The EmsRadweg also runs for around 60 kilometers through Steinfurt District. Its protected riverbanks offer special nature experiences.
