Ladbergen offers several specific points of interest to help you choose a destination: local history in the town centre, the milling history of the Erpenbeck Grain Mill, nature-related cycling and the Way of St. James. The Historic Walking Tour leads through the town centre, the Lapwing Route reaches the Hölter Feld nature reserve, and the Way of St. James passes through Ladbergen via named stops. Depending on what interests you most, you can get to know the town through its history, routes or pilgrimage trails.

Local history: walking tour and museum

The Historic Walking Tour leads through Ladbergen’s town centre and is about 1,000 metres long. Nine information boards at prominent locations show how the municipality developed as a town. The walking tour is therefore a compact way to explore the town’s development and its various stages.

A guided walk exploring local history also visits prominent spots in the town centre, but focuses on different aspects: local personalities, events and buildings. Prior arrangements may be necessary. The walking tour presents the town’s development through information boards; the guided walk also focuses on the people and events mentioned.

The Ladbergen Local History Museum is located on the edge of the Lönsheide nature reserve. It presents the development of the town from prehistoric times to the present day. Its historical overview thus reaches far back in time, while the Historic Walking Tour traces the town’s development at prominent locations in the town centre. Those interested in Ladbergen’s history can explore it in different ways: on a route through the centre or through the museum’s exhibits.

The mill and the history of peace

The Erpenbeck Grain Mill adds a specific technical and craft-related aspect to the town’s history. It was completed in 1840 as an oil, buckwheat and chicory mill and is a listed building. Visitors can watch a milling demonstration, during which the miller explains technical details and the mill’s history.

Another historical point of interest is the Peace Park by the town hall, which commemorates the Peace of MĂĽnster and OsnabrĂĽck. The mill and the park thus offer different perspectives. The mill is about its technical history and milling, while the Peace Park commemorates the peace settlement.

Cycling by the Hölter Feld nature reserve

The 40-kilometre Lapwing Route was designated by the municipalities of Ladbergen and Saerbeck. It reaches the Hölter Feld nature reserve in Ladbergen, which covers around 380 hectares, and is connected to the Münsterland cycling network. When planning your route, you can distinguish between two different measurements: 40 kilometres is the length of the route, while around 380 hectares is the area of the nature reserve. This links the cycle route to a specific natural area without treating route length and area size as the same thing.

The Way of St. James and getting around

In Ladbergen, the Way of St. James runs from Lönsweg alongside the Mühlenbach stream, past the Old Water Mill and the Zur Post inn, to the Protestant church. This sequence names the stops along the route in the town. There are also several stamp stations for pilgrims in Ladbergen. Before setting out, check which stamp stations are currently available.

The location is also useful for planning your journey: Ladbergen is near the Ladbergen exit on the A1.
