Horstmar combines a clearly defined medieval old town with striking buildings and a direct connection to the RadBahn Münsterland. This gives you two perspectives to consider when planning your trip: you can get to know the town through its layout and historic landmarks, or consider Horstmar as a destination on the RadBahn. The buildings differ in their architecture and in how they tell the story of the town. You can choose your destination based on whether you want to focus primarily on historic urban structure, individual buildings or a cycling tour.

Old town: layout, town gates and manor houses

The medieval layout of the historic old town is clearly structured. The church and town hall stand at its centre; the square plan is defined along its outer edges by former fortified manor houses. This arrangement makes the overall form a useful guide: the centre and the perimeter can be distinguished conceptually, rather than viewing the old town simply as a collection of individual buildings. Those interested in urban architecture can therefore read the town’s history on two scales – through the medieval layout of the settlement and through its individual buildings.

The Schlosstor, also called the Burgtor, is a striking reminder of the former town layout. It is the last of Horstmar’s four town gates to survive and is considered unique in Westphalia. The names Schlosstor and Burgtor refer to the same building; the number four refers to the former gate system. The surviving gate can thus be understood both as a building in its own right and as part of the town’s history.

Buildings and historic traces

Merveldter Hof was built in 1561 as a magnificent three-wing complex in the Dutch Renaissance style. Its form and style describe two aspects of the building: its three-wing layout and its Renaissance character. One of its distinctive architectural features is the “Specklagentechnik” (“bacon-layer technique”). This specialist term adds a construction detail to the description; together, the year of construction, building form and technique offer different ways of looking at Horstmar’s architecture.

St. Gertrudis Church in Horstmar is a Gothic hall church dating from the second half of the 14th century. Its tower is over 66 metres high; loopholes still visible today point to its character as a defensive tower. Two aspects therefore come together in one building: Gothic church architecture and a tower whose recognisable features indicate a defensive function.

Borchorster Hof adds a further historical perspective: it was first mentioned in a document in 1277. The site of the former Horstmar Castle is an archaeological monument; sandstone blocks mark the former course of the wall. Different historical clues thus sit side by side: the first documented mention of a manor house and the markers of a former wall’s course.

Church art in the district of Leer

The Church of Ss. Cosmas and Damian in the district of Leer contains a rare medieval vault painting dating from around 1400. It adds a distinctive focus on art to the buildings of the old town: alongside the layout, town gate and defensive tower, the emphasis here is on medieval church art. The approximate date places the painting around 1400 without assigning it to a specific year. Leer thus broadens the cultural and historical perspective on Horstmar with a remarkable example of religious art.

Plan your trip with the RadBahn Münsterland

Horstmar is also a relevant destination for cyclists: the town is directly connected to the 39.4-kilometre RadBahn Münsterland. This railway-line cycle path follows the former railway route from Rheine to Coesfeld. Its length and endpoints give the route a geographical context; its direct connection to Horstmar makes it a possible reference point for your trip planning. If you include the RadBahn in your ride, check the current route and condition in advance, as infrastructure can change.

The sights and the RadBahn offer different points of focus: one is the medieval urban structure and individual historic landmarks, the other a cycling route with its own length and named endpoints. This distinction can help you choose Horstmar to suit the purpose of your trip.
