For a trip to Wulkenzin, several distinct themes are available: the history of the church, forest trails to Lake Tollense, the local section of the Lake Tollense cycling loop and sports facilities at Tollense Court. When planning, you can weigh up whether architectural history, landscape or activity is the biggest draw.

Wulkenzin Church: Architecture and History

Wulkenzin Church is a rectangular brick hall built on a fieldstone base. The chancel has a polygonal, or many-sided, end, and a tower stands in front of the building. The church was built in 1830–31 by Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel, building councillor for the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and a student of Schinkel. Its orientation also differs from the usual pattern: the altar area is in the west rather than the east.

Wulkenzin was a parish village from an early date. Nine small painted panes in the apse windows depict various scenes and come from the predecessor church; many bear the year 1695. The organ was originally made by Ernst Sauer in 1839 for the teachers' seminary in Mirow. Edmund Bruder of Wismar moved it to Wulkenzin in 1887. The details about the building, window panes and organ reveal different chapters in the church's history.

Cycling and Sports

The 35-kilometre cycling loop around Lake Tollense is hilly. It follows well-gravelled or asphalted paths and, in places, quiet side roads. The Lake Tollense loop also has particular importance for regional and cross-regional cycling network connections.

In the municipality of Wulkenzin, the route follows Gatscher Weg along the lake to Gatsch Eck campsite. A 2026 administrative report notes that cyclists currently have to use the unpaved summer path there. The characteristics of the entire loop and the path conditions on this local section are separate points to consider when planning your rides. Check the path conditions before setting off.

Tollense Court in Wulkenzin offers tennis, badminton and squash. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check what is currently available before your visit.
