The Mecklenburg Lake District offers nature experiences with a range of different focuses. Müritz National Park is part of the region and is characterised by forests, bogs, lakes and expansive meadows. The Damerower Werder Bison Reserve is located on a peninsula on Lake Kölpin; it is situated in both the Mecklenburg Lake District and Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park. This places the landscapes of the national park alongside a specific place for wildlife watching. When planning your trip, you can choose between hiking, guided nature tours, waterways and wildlife watching.

Bison Reserve and Forest Discovery Trail

Visitors can observe the animals at the Damerower Werder Bison Reserve. A forest discovery trail complements this focus with climbing opportunities, an ant house, an exhibition with tactile and visual display boards, and a dendrophone. This makes the distinction within this nature destination clear: alongside wildlife watching, there is a trail with several named features. The exhibition engages two senses through its tactile and visual display boards; the climbing opportunities and ant house offer different points of interest.

Hiking and Nature Tours

The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail covers the national park in nine stages. It runs along lakes, through ancient forests, past inland dunes and to the source of the Havel. The route thus combines several types of landscape and leads to a specific destination. Certified nature and landscape guides offer another way to explore the park, with informative tours. These include guided tours in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water. When choosing between the options, you can consider whether the nine stages and changing landscapes or guided interpretation focused on a specific forest or water theme matters more to you.

Waterways and Getting Around

The water offers another practical starting point: from Neustrelitz City Harbour, waterway travellers can explore Müritz National Park and the Strelitz Small Lake District via the Upper Havel Waterway. Neustrelitz is therefore a starting point for exploring by water. The mode of travel is a clear distinction when making your choice: the hiking trail covers the landscape in nine stages, nature tours offer certified guidance, and the waterway from Neustrelitz is another option in its own right.

In the surrounding area of the Mecklenburg Lake District, near Stuer, is BÄRENWALD Müritz, a 16-hectare sanctuary where rescued brown bears live in a natural setting. BÄRENWALD is open daily year-round and can be reached by bicycle via the cycle path around Lake Plau or the Mecklenburg Lake District Cycle Route. Please check the opening information again before your visit.

A Different Focus: Aviation Technology

The Rechlin Aviation Technology Museum is located in Rechlin Nord. Its focus on aviation technology sets it apart from the nature experiences described above. If you would like to include a technology theme in your trip alongside forests, water and wildlife watching, this museum offers a different point of interest.
