Waren / Müritz is shaped by its location directly on Lake Müritz, the neighbouring Müritz National Park and a wide range of nature and cultural attractions. When choosing your stay, you can consider whether you would like to focus primarily on the landscape, activities on the water, the town’s history or several of these aspects. The following points will help you explore the different sides of the destination as you plan your trip.

Nature and the National Park

Waren (Müritz) lies directly on the shores of Lake Müritz; the Müritz National Park borders the town. This means that the lakeshore right by the town and the adjacent national park offer two distinct ways to experience nature. The Müritzeum in Waren is a nature discovery centre featuring Germany’s largest aquarium landscape for native freshwater species. If you are interested in freshwater life, this adds a dedicated focus to the landscape experience.

Exploring by water and on foot

Passenger boat trips on Lake Müritz include short circular cruises and day trips with a stop ashore. On day trips, time ashore is part of the experience; circular cruises focus on Lake Müritz. If you are planning a specific trip, check the timetable in advance. This will help you factor the stop ashore into your day’s plans.

Waren (Müritz) and the region can be explored on guided or independent tours on foot, by bicycle or on the water. You can consider both your chosen mode of transport and whether you would prefer to be accompanied by a guide or travel independently. Hiking options range from a short route of 9 km to a multi-day hike of 907 km. This range covers routes of different lengths: a short route at one end and a multi-day hike at the other. When planning, consider which format suits the time you have available.

Town history and craftsmanship

The Waren Town History Museum has been housed in the town’s historic town hall at Neuer Markt since 1998. Tile-making is also associated with a specific location: numerous tiles and tile-making tools are on display in the former tile pottery. The Alte Kacheltöpferei in Waren is a former tile pottery preserved in its original condition. The objects and the preserved state of the former production site offer two different perspectives on this craft: the tiles and production tools on the one hand, and the former tile pottery on the other.

St. Mary’s Church and viewing platform

St. Mary’s Church incorporates the remains of a castle chapel built before 1225 and a nave built before 1333 in the Brick Gothic style. Since 1995, the tower has had a viewing platform at a height of 45 m, reached by a staircase with 176 steps. If you plan to visit the platform, bear the stairs in mind and check current access arrangements before your visit.

Fish and regional cuisine

In Waren, freshly smoked fish is served straight from the smoker on board every day, alongside freshly prepared fish dishes and fish sandwiches. The region’s abundance of water and forest influences its local cuisine. This adds a culinary dimension to the nature, culture and activities on offer during your stay.
