Discover Demmin: organ, planetarium and cycling routes
Accommodation in Demmin
Demmin can be explored from several different perspectives during a stay: sacred organ history, a Gothic town hall, a water tower converted into a planetarium, a natural swimming lake and two cycling routes with named stops along the way. If you are looking for a hotel in Demmin, you can plan your trip around whether you want to focus primarily on architectural and musical history, astronomy, swimming or cycling. The following places and routes offer specific ideas for doing so.
Organ and town hall: Demmin’s history
The Buchholz organ, built in 1819, is located in Demmin’s St. Bartholomaei Church. The Stettin organ builder Grüneberg modified and expanded it in 1866/67. It has four manuals, a pedal and 52 stops. Manuals are the keyboards played with the hands; the pedal is played with the feet, and the stops affect the timbre. The organ was restored between 1998 and 2002 and was consecrated again in September 2002. This instrument thus brings together an early date, a later modification and a still later restoration. For music enthusiasts, both its technical features and the sequence of interventions offer specific points of interest.
Demmin’s Gothic town hall was faithfully rebuilt and inaugurated in September 1998. Unlike the organ, the focus here is on the rebuilding of the structure; the church offers a different perspective through the history of its instrument. Together, the two buildings provide different ways to explore the town’s architectural and cultural history.
From water tower to planetarium
Built of red brick in 1897, the Demmin water tower was converted into a planetarium with an observatory and viewing platform after it ceased to be used for the water supply. Its history therefore differs from that of the town hall: the focus here is the change from water supply to astronomical use.
At the planetarium in Demmin’s water tower, visitors can learn about astronomy and observe the night sky during public or private events. Check current event dates in advance if you would like to plan your stay around one of these offerings.
Swimming and play at Biberburg
The Biberburg natural swimming lake is a naturally landscaped bathing area with plenty of opportunities for play and relaxation. Its listed attractions include a 51-metre giant slide, two diving towers and a playground. Here, the focus differs from that of the historic sites: swimming and relaxation go hand in hand with specific play and diving facilities. If you would like to include these activities in your trip, you can treat Biberburg as a separate stop alongside the organ, town hall and planetarium.
Two cycling routes from Demmin
One cycling tour starts in Demmin and goes via Verchen to Dargun, with the ruins of the monastery and castle complex. The return journey to Demmin goes via Upost, with its rampart and burial mounds. A second tour leads from Demmin via Medrow and Nehringen, with its wooden bascule bridge, and Brudersdorf, returning to Demmin harbour.
The named stops offer different points of interest: the first tour links ruins, a rampart and burial mounds; on the second, the wooden bascule bridge in Nehringen is the specific structure along the route. If you choose based on the stops described, you can distinguish between the two routes according to their respective themes.
