When looking for a hotel in Dargun, you can plan your trip around the interests you want to pursue locally: history and culture, time by the water or forest trails. The monastery and castle complex, Dargun’s Klostersee lake and the recreational forest offer specific themes to explore. The local history museum, historic Slavic rampart site, maze and watermill each add their own highlights.

Views and culture at the monastery and castle complex

The observation tower at the monastery and castle complex can be reached via a spiral staircase with more than 92 steps. Its viewing platform is 25 m high; from there, the view extends over Dargun, Klostersee lake and the monastery and castle complex. The town, lake and complex are thus all part of the panorama described.

The imposing walls of the former monastery can be seen on a guided tour of the grounds. The complex is also a venue for events: numerous events take place there every year, including the Dargun Music Summer. Concerts and church services are held in St. Mary’s Monastery Church. If you are planning to visit specifically for a concert or the Music Summer, check the event dates in advance.

Museum, rampart site and watermill

“Uns lütt Museum” is a local history museum where visitors can touch and try things out. Its collection is displayed in 15 rooms and in the outdoor area. The museum is located in the monastery’s former guesthouse and covers 760 m². The exhibition rooms and outdoor area together provide the setting for the collection.

In Dargun’s recreational forest, the historic “Slavic Rampart Site” experience trail explores a different era. Information boards explain how Slavs lived and worked more than 1,000 years ago. Anyone interested in the region’s history can explore past ways of life and work here.

Another historic structure is the Dargun watermill. It is a technical monument and was built as a watermill by Cistercian monks in the 13th century. It therefore differs in focus from the local history museum and the rampart site: here, the emphasis is on a structure from the history of technology.

Trails in Dargun’s recreational forest

The forest experience trail in Dargun’s recreational forest has 15 stations and offers two routes of different lengths: the “Frischling” (young boar) tour is 1.5 km long, while the “Überläufer” (yearling boar) tour is 3 km long. When comparing the two options, distance is a useful point of reference: the Frischling tour is shorter, and the Überläufer tour is longer. Another hiking route is the historic “Slavic Rampart Site” experience trail, where information boards explain how Slavs lived and worked more than 1,000 years ago. The two trails therefore have different thematic focuses: forest stations on one, historical information on the other.

Klostersee lake and other landscape highlights

Dargun’s Klostersee lake invites visitors to stroll along the lake promenade, swim, fish and go boating. Alongside walking by the water, activities on and in the lake are therefore options to consider when planning your trip.

Dargun is the gateway to the two nature parks “Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow” and “Peene Valley River Landscape.” In addition to its specific sights, the town is thus associated with two named nature parks. The maze at Waldeck offers another distinct attraction: it is a special highlight and an experience for the whole family. Covering 8,500 m² and featuring hornbeam hedges taller than a person, it is defined by its size and design.
