Buch a.Buchrain combines a distinctive church with opportunities for walking, hiking and cycling. St. Martin is a cultural focal point; the woodland areas, hiking trails and the “Through the Erdinger Land” cycle route add a variety of activities to the character of the town. When planning your trip, you can choose what interests you: architecture, walks and bike rides offer different perspectives on the place.

St. Martin and the Oak Artwork

The Baroque church of St. Martin is one of the sights in Buch a.Buchrain. Its core structure is Late Gothic; in 1760, Johan Baptist Lethner substantially remodeled the church in the Rococo style. The Late Gothic core and the 1760 remodeling thus represent different construction phases. St. Martin is considered a characteristic example of a uniformly preserved Rococo country church of great artistic and art-historical significance. The building is a hall church with a narrower, three-sided chancel. A tower with a tiered upper section and a profiled onion dome stands on the south side.

In front of the parish church stands the oak artwork “Over 1,200 Years of Buch.” Sculptor Florian Brunner created it at the initiative of the woodcarving symposium. The wooden work adds its own artistic touch alongside the church building; its material, creator and location give it a character distinct from the architecture.

Walks, Hiking Trails and Cycle Route

The woodland areas invite you to go for walks in every season. The B 2 “To Richinger Berg” circular hiking trail near Buch a.Buchrain is about six kilometers long, runs along the edge of the forest and offers views of the Kaltenbach Valley. This gives you both a year-round walking destination and a loop of approximately known length. The B 2 offers a useful indication of the distance for planning; the forest edge and views of the Kaltenbach Valley add specific landscape features to the route information. Other hiking trails associated with the municipality of Buch a.Buchrain include B 3 “Around Kaltenbach” and B 5 “To Müllnerbrünnel.” The path to the fish ladder on the Hammerbach is also a worthwhile destination for an outing in Buch a.Buchrain.

The “Through the Erdinger Land” cycle route follows the Middle Isar Canal, the Sempt and the Schwillach, then continues through Buch am Buchrain. The route gets somewhat more challenging as it approaches Buch am Buchrain because it crosses the Isen spring area. The sequence of waterways and the crossing are two distinct points of reference for planning your ride: one describes the route, while the other indicates the level of difficulty on the section toward Buch. Check current conditions on the cycle route before setting off.
