When planning a trip to Steinkirchen, you can explore two distinct interests: the architectural history of its churches and the shared pedestrian and cycle path along district road ED 26. St. Laurentius Parish Church and the Seelenkapelle (Chapel of Souls) offer specific insights into different building phases. The path leads from Steinkirchen towards Taufkirchen.

Brick Architecture in Steinkirchen

The Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius is an elevated, unplastered brick structure dating from the late 15th century, and it has interior furnishings. The current building dates from the Late Gothic period, around 1470. It is unplastered and designed in the Landshut style: the nave has four bays, while the slightly recessed choir has two. The choir ends in three sides of an octagon. For more than a millennium, the parish church was the spiritual center of the surrounding villages. This distinguishes its long-standing historical role from the age of the present building.

The altars are also part of the church’s architectural and furnishing history: the two late Baroque side altars were created around 1738 by Veit Madersbacher, a cabinetmaker from Erding. They therefore date from a later period than the Late Gothic church building.

The cemetery’s Seelenkapelle (Chapel of Souls) represents a different period. It is an unplastered brick structure with a half-hipped roof, dating from the early 16th century, and has interior furnishings. The parish church and the chapel share their brick masonry, but they were built at different times. The present parish church dates from the Late Gothic period, around 1470, while the chapel dates from the early 16th century.

Churches in the Associated Municipality

The Catholic branch churches in the associated municipality also reflect different building phases. St. Laurentius and St. Stephanus in Ebering is a small, unplastered brick structure dating from around 1300, with a Late Gothic choir vault and interior furnishings. In Kögning, St. Michael has a Late Gothic choir; its nave and tower date from 1733 and were the first work by Joh. Bapt. Lethner. The two churches can thus be dated by their architectural features: in Ebering, the appearance is shaped by an early building and a later vault, while in Kögning the Late Gothic choir contrasts with a nave and tower from the 18th century.

Pedestrian and Cycle Path Towards Taufkirchen

A shared pedestrian and cycle path runs along district road ED 26 from Steinkirchen towards Taufkirchen. The middle section between Eldering and Kögning has been officially opened. If you are planning a continuous journey, check the route beforehand; the opening of this section alone does not establish whether an entire route is continuous.

More to Explore in the Wider Erding Destination

In the wider Erding destination, the Erdinger Bauernhausmuseum offers a distinct focus: it comprises 15 historic buildings relocated from the Erding district and presents the historic rural economy and way of life of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It complements Steinkirchen’s church architecture with a different perspective on historical life in the region.

Erding also offers a range of route options for planning your time. The hiking trails there are between 5.9 and 15 kilometers long, with estimated walking times ranging from one and a half to five hours. The themed trails take around an hour and lead through the old town, various districts, or in the footsteps of artists. This lets you compare the approximate time required for the routes on offer without assuming that duration indicates a particular level of difficulty.

The farmers’ market on the grounds of the Erdinger Bauernhausmuseum takes place on Fridays from 12:00 to 16:30. Farmers from the Erding district offer regional and seasonal goods and food there. Market hours may change, so check them before your visit.
