If you are looking for a hotel in Taufkirchen (Vils), local history, sculptures and market days can shape your travel plans. The moated castle has defined the townscape and its history for centuries. The town also offers themed activities and a natural swimming lake within the municipality. The different attractions let you plan your trip around the subjects that interest you.

Moated Castle and Sculptures in Taufkirchen (Vils)

The castle tour passes, among other places, the moated castle in Taufkirchen (Vils). Another stop is part of the SkulpTour: behind the town hall, it is located at the “Bierblumentanz” sculpture. The two themed routes offer different perspectives—one focuses on the moated castle, the other on a specific sculpture. The castle chapel is inside the moated castle and has room for 20 people.

The chapel in Zwergerlwald also has its own history and timeline: it was built in 2001 and consecrated in 2002. It was donated by Andreas Fortner from Taufkirchen. Zwergerlwald is home to more than 500 gnomes, many of which were donated. Due to construction work on the Taufkirchen (Vils) bypass, Zwergerlwald is inaccessible until further notice. Check access before your trip.

Markets and Nature Attractions

The Adlberger Markt, Taufkirchen’s oldest goods market, is held every year on the weekend before Pentecost. During the market, Landshuter Straße between Marktplatz and Hierlhof, as well as Bräuhausstraße, become a market, promenade and entertainment area. If you would like to plan your stay around a market visit, check the dates for the relevant year.

Lain am See, also known as Lainer Weiher, is located within the municipality. The lake is a natural swimming lake fed by spring water. It is also the only pond in the district of Erding with an adjoining campsite. Check the current conditions before swimming.

Erding as a Wider-Area Travel Destination

In the wider-area destination of Erding, the Erdinger Bauernhausmuseum offers a distinct focus on cultural history. It comprises 15 historic buildings relocated there from the district of Erding and presents rural economic and everyday life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This offers a different historical perspective alongside the local history shaped by the moated castle in Taufkirchen. City bus routes 523 and 524 and regional bus routes 561 and 562 serve the “Erding-Freilichtmuseum” stop near the museum. Check connections before travelling.

The guided tour of Erding’s town tower takes you up one of the city’s oldest buildings. After 163 steps, you reach a height of 35 metres. From there, the view stretches across Erding and the surrounding area as far as Munich and, in foehn conditions, to the Alpine panorama. The conditional long-distance view of the Alps is a distinctive feature of this tour.

For planning your time, Erding’s hiking trails and themed trails can be considered separately: the hiking trails are between 5.9 and 15 kilometres long, with estimated walking times of between one and a half and five hours. The themed trails take around an hour and lead through the old town, various districts or in the footsteps of painters. One hiking trail leads to the Church of St Martin in Indorf. The distances and times offer different ways to plan, and the trails should not be treated as equivalent.

The farmers’ market on the grounds of the Erdinger Bauernhausmuseum is another attraction in Erding. It is open every Friday from 12:00 to 16:30; farmers from the district of Erding offer regional and seasonal goods and food there. As market times may change, check the current date before your visit.
