Oberding brings together local history, church art, sculptures and cycling routes. Some of the destinations featured here are in other parts of the municipality. When planning your visit, consider whether you are most interested in churches, local history or cycling.

Local history and church art

Oberding, or its predecessor settlement of Dieng, was first mentioned in a document in 750 AD. St. George’s Church in the village of Oberding is described as historically significant for its art and features Baroque and Rococo furnishings.

Other churches with Baroque and Rococo furnishings are located in the municipality: St. Nicholas in Notzing and St. John the Baptist in Aufkirchen are also described as historically significant for their art. The same applies to St. Martin’s Church in Niederding. It also has a ship’s pulpit; there are only a few similar examples in Bavaria.

In Notzing, the moated castle is one of the landmarks of cultural and social development in the Middle Ages. Another historical trace can be found in Aufkirchen: the base pyramid at the power station commemorates the 1801 land survey, when the church tower in Aufkirchen served as a reference point. These places offer different ways to explore the municipality’s history.

Landscape, art and activity

The municipality of Oberding includes large parts of the Erdinger Moos and the ridge between the rivers Sempt and Dorfen. This means the municipality encompasses a range of landscapes as well as its individual villages.

Two route descriptions for cyclists pass through different parts of the municipality. The “Ring of the Regions” runs via the airport and through Oberding on its way back to Erding. Cycling Tour 1, “Around the Airport,” passes through the Schwaigermoos and, on the return journey, goes through Schwaig, across fields and open countryside, to Erding. While Oberding is explicitly on the Ring route, the second tour mentions the Schwaigermoos and the return journey through Schwaig. SkulpTour III also features wooden sculptures created in the summer of 2017 at the third and final International Woodcarving Symposium in Oberding.

Include Erding in your travel plans, too

If you also include Erding in your travel plans, the Erding Farmhouse Museum offers a look at the historic farming and way of life of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It comprises 15 historic buildings relocated there from the Erding district. The museum offers a distinctive perspective on the region’s history.

In Erding, a guided tour of the town tower takes you up one of the city’s oldest buildings. After 163 steps, you reach a height of 35 metres. From there, the view stretches across Erding and the surrounding area as far as Munich and, in foehn conditions, to the Alpine panorama. The towers and churches in Oberding and the destinations in Erding offer different historical perspectives for your travel plans.
