There are many different ways to explore the Rems-Murr District: hike a multi-stage trail, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Limes, or focus on local history and wine culture. When planning your trip, it helps to decide first which of these experiences you want to shape it.

Rems-Murr-Kreis

Hiking and exploring the Limes

The Rems-Murr hiking trail is 50 kilometres long and can be hiked in three stages, from Endersbach via Winnenden to Murrhardt. You can download the route navigation to your smartphone and have it ready for your hike. The entire trail is well served by local public transport, so you do not need a car to get there. Check the connections for your travel dates.

The seasonal Limesbus Nord also offers opportunities to hike between sites of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Limes or take part in guided tours led by Limes Cicerones. Route 372 runs from May until the penultimate Sunday in October on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, travelling from Murrhardt via Grab and Großerlach to Mainhardt and back. As this is a seasonal service, check the current operating days before you travel.

Local history and special guided tours

In Murrhardt, a night watchman shares stories and legends by torchlight. The activity is also suitable for children, who can bring lanterns. Confirm the availability of the visitor programme locally. Here, the focus is on listening together, while other activities explore the history of specific places or buildings.

Historical tours in Backnang follow in the footsteps of the Margraves and lead to St. Pancratius Collegiate Church. The church is the burial place of the Margraves of Baden. In Fellbach, a walking tour of the city centre takes visitors past historic landmarks and award-winning architecture. Those interested in local history can learn about it on guided tours in Schorndorf. For tours in Backnang, Fellbach and Schorndorf, it is advisable to check locally whether they are available.

Wine tastings and regional produce

In Fellbach, the Fellbacher Weingärtner offer wine tastings, cellar tours and a snack at the Neue Kelter. There are several ways to discover the wine and how it is made: sample the wine, take a tour of the cellar, or combine a tour with a snack. Check in advance whether the particular offer is available on your chosen date.

The annual Weintreff at the Alte Kelter in Fellbach is another occasion to visit. At this elegant tasting, numerous wine producers and other regional food and drink artisans from the Remstal-Stuttgart region present their products. As event dates may change, check the dates for the year you plan to travel.

Cycling routes and tours in the surrounding area

For a cycling trip, the Remstal Cycle Path starts at Endersbach station in Weinstadt and runs via Kernen and Fellbach towards Remseck am Neckar. It is around 106 kilometres long. This offers a different way to explore the region from the Rems-Murr hiking trail and its three stages. The two routes follow different paths; the distances and places mentioned give you a first point of reference when planning your tours.

In the wider region, the FeenSpuren trails lead through the Swabian Forest and the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park, offering opportunities to experience nature and the landscape. Information about nature and the landscape is provided along the way. The Mühlenwanderweg, also in the Swabian Forest, passes 13 mills. These options complement the specific hiking and cycling experiences in the Rems-Murr District with more ways to explore the surrounding area.

The Idyllische Straße holiday route is 180 kilometres long. Between Mainhardt and Alfdorf, and between Spiegelberg and Abtsgmünd, it passes old mills, bathing lakes, Limes remains and reconstructions, away from major tourist routes. Near Großerlach, it includes a circular route from Grab via Rottal to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Limes. The circular route and the longer holiday road offer different options for an excursion: a tour near Großerlach or a longer drive through the wider area.

Plan your stay around your own interests
