Discover Winterbach: hiking, cycling and local history
Accommodation in Winterbach
Winterbach brings together several specific highlights for a trip: circular trails of varying lengths, the Remstal Cycle Route along the renaturalized Rems, a historic town center and a village and local history museum. When choosing a hotel, you can decide whether hiking, cycling, local history or culture will be the focus of your stay.
Hiking Trails and Cycling
Three circular trails of varying distances are available for hiking. The “Engelberger Panorama Trail” is 6 kilometers long and starts at Winterbach station. The “Wildes Lehenbachtal” circular trail covers 7.1 kilometers and starts at Winterbach outdoor pool. At 5.6 kilometers, the “Wine and Orchard Trail” is the shortest of the three; it combines hiking with viticulture and traditional orchards, themes typical of Winterbach and the Remstal. The difference between the shortest and longest routes is 1.5 kilometers.
While the three circular trails range from 5.6 to 7.1 kilometers, the Remstal Cycle Route stretches for around 106 kilometers in total and runs through Winterbach alongside the renaturalized Rems. This lets you compare the local choice of circular trails of different lengths with the considerably longer cycle route.
Museum and Local History
The Winterbach Village and Local History Museum is housed in a building erected in 1776. It illustrates the layout of a typical local farmhouse, where living quarters, livestock and food storage were all under one roof. A few meters west of the museum stands the former Hafner pottery kiln, which was renovated in 1995/96. It is part of the museum: products made by the Hafner pottery are on display there, and a potter’s wheel is set up and in operation. The museum thus brings together the living and working areas of a farmhouse and insights into the Hafner pottery tradition.
Winterbach’s historic town center includes St. Michael’s Church, the Neptune Fountain on the market square and three town halls. These buildings and the fountain offer specific points of interest if you are interested in Winterbach’s townscape. Culture lovers can also enjoy the Winterbach Cultural Association’s annual program, which includes visual arts, crafts, theater, music and literature. The association is a partnership between the municipal cultural office and its circle of friends.
Play Areas and More Hiking in the Rems-Murr District
Driftwood play equipment and a water fountain area for children are located on the banks of the Rems at Gleisdorfer Platz. The public Hindererstein barbecue and playground offers a different setting: it is car-free, on the edge of the forest in the Lehenbachtal valley and close to the reservoir. To choose between the two places, you can compare their surroundings and the activities mentioned: water features for children on the banks of the Rems, or a barbecue and playground on the edge of the forest.
The 50-kilometer Rems-Murr Hiking Trail runs through the Rems-Murr district. It can be hiked in three stages from Endersbach via Winnenden to Murrhardt. Route directions can be downloaded to a smartphone. The entire trail is well served by local public transport, so you do not need a car to get there. Check current connections before your hike, as public transport services may change.
