Urbach: Landslide, trails and local history
Accommodation in Urbach
Urbach offers a range of options to consider when planning your trip: the landslide shapes the landscape, several themed trails each focus on different topics, and the media library and museum explore local history. Before choosing a hotel, you can decide which experiences you would like to prioritize during your stay.
Trails around the landslide and through the forest
The Landslide Circular Trail is around three kilometres long and runs through orchards around the Urbach landslide. Seven information panels cover the history, geology, flora and fauna of the landslide area. The landslide occurred in 2001 and has become a landmark of Urbach.
The 2.2-kilometre Forest Discovery Trail features interactive stations and trail elements that offer an active, holistic way to experience nature. It is designed for families, schools and kindergartens. The nearby Hauwiese forest playground and barbecue area lies between the Forest Discovery Trail and the Landslide Circular Trail. There is space to relax, play and take a break; the area can also turn a visit to the Forest Discovery Trail into a full-day outing.
The trail lengths offer a useful starting point when choosing: the Forest Discovery Trail is shorter than the Landslide Circular Trail, which is around three kilometres long. If you would rather walk through almost the entire town, you can plan the nearly four-kilometre stroll through Urbach. These trails offer different experiences, from nature and information to a walk around town.
The Fruit-Growing Educational Trail runs along Linsenberg. Its topics include fruit growing, woody plants, ecology and landscape. From there, you can look south across the Rems Valley and towards the opposite heights of the Schurwald. The trail combines information about the cultural landscape with views of two named landscape areas.
Mountain biking
The Flowtrail is part of a roughly 14-kilometre loop in Urbach and includes two sections. It is free to use. A suitable mountain bike, a helmet and adequate bike-handling skills are required. To prevent damage, do not ride the trail in wet conditions. Check the conditions before setting off. The requirements are quite different from those for the walking and themed trails described above: suitable equipment and riding experience are expressly required for the Flowtrail.
Local history at the media library and museum
A permanent exhibition on the history of the municipality is located on the second floor of the Urbach Media Library. It spans the period from the Ice Age through the Middle Ages to the present day. Check current opening hours and visitor rules before your visit.
The Museum at Widumhof is housed in one of Urbach’s oldest half-timbered houses. In addition to the museum rooms on the upper floors, there is an exhibition room on the ground floor featuring changing topics, as well as a renovated museum cellar in the vaulted basement. While the media library exhibition traces history from the Ice Age to the present day, the museum also features changing exhibition topics and the various rooms of the half-timbered house.
Weekly market and Christmas market
The weekly market takes place once a week, usually on Fridays from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the marketplace in the centre of Urbach. Since this is the usual schedule, it is best to check the times before planning a visit.
The traditional Christmas market takes place on the second Sunday of Advent from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the centre of Urbach, in the marketplace and around the roundabout. The exact calendar date depends on the Advent date. If you are planning your trip around the market, check the date of the second Sunday of Advent for that year.
