Großerlach combines hikes in the Magic Triangle with Limes history and distinctive high points. The trip ideas focus on different things: they range from circular routes through varied landscapes to a trail about the Limes and views from the Hohe Brach. This lets you plan your excursions around what you would like to explore during your stay.

Hiking and Limes history

In the Magic Triangle, hiking routes pass through plains, hills and valleys. The joint hiking map shows four circular routes in the Großerlach area, as well as two other newly designed circular routes. This gives you a choice of different routes. As information in future editions of the map may be revised, it is worth checking the latest edition before planning.

The 28-kilometre Limes trail offers a different perspective on the region. It runs between the reconstructed watchtower on the Heidenbuckel near Großerlach-Grab and Öhringen. Along the route, 18 large text and image panels explain the Roman occupation period. Topics include soldiers’ lives, buildings and settlements, and the construction and fall of the Limes.

On the Heidenbuckel south of Grab stands a fully restored, walk-in stone Limes tower. The Heidenbuckel is 536 metres above sea level and is one of the highest watchtower sites along the Limes. You can consider the trail as a longer route option and the tower as a distinct historical highlight.

Panoramic views and special places

The Hohe Brach reaches an elevation of 586 metres. From there, the view extends to the Swabian Alb and across the Backnang Basin as far as Stuttgart. The viewpoint offers a different focus from the Heidenbuckel: here, the long-distance views take centre stage, while the Heidenbuckel is about Limes history and the watchtower site.

The Silberstollen also offers a special glimpse: around 30 metres are accessible and lit. This figure refers to that section; the approximate length can help you factor the visit into your excursion plans.

Seasonal activities and travel

The ski slope at BikePark Großerlach is a seasonal winter attraction. It has two runs that are longer than 500 metres and have an elevation difference of more than 60 metres, as well as a toboggan run. A separate snow park has been built with jumps and rails for experienced freestyle skiers and snowboarders. If you plan to take advantage of a seasonal activity, check the current operating conditions before travelling.

The Limesbus Nord, route 372, operates seasonally in the wider destination of Rems-Murr-Kreis. From May until the second-to-last Sunday in October, it runs on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from Murrhardt via Grab and Großerlach to Mainhardt and back. Check the current operating days and dates before travelling. The Limesbus Nord can carry bicycles and e-bikes on a bicycle trailer; carriage may be subject to operational conditions.
