Discover Sulzbach an der Murr
Accommodation in Sulzbach
Sulzbach an der Murr is best explored through its half-timbered heritage and hiking trails. If you are looking for a hotel in Sulzbach an der Murr, you can consider whether local history or hiking should be the focus of your trip planning. The historic buildings range from a Renaissance pulpit to a former moated castle. The trails differ in several ways, including their length and themes.
Half-timbered architecture and local history
The townscape is shaped by imposing half-timbered gabled houses, most of which were built after the fire of 1753. Another example of half-timbered architecture is the former washhouse and bakehouse in Schmale Gasse. Its upper half-timbered storey is partly supported by stone pillars; the building is one of the few surviving examples of its kind. In Sulzbach, you can discover half-timbered architecture not only in the gabled houses but also in a former washhouse and bakehouse.
The Protestant Ulrichskirche dates from 1754 to 1756 and houses a pulpit from the Renaissance period. This brings together references to different eras in one building: the church dates from the 18th century, while the pulpit is attributed to the Renaissance.
The former Lautereck moated castle adds to the selection of historic buildings. It is a half-timbered building from the second half of the 17th century and has two corner towers. Together, the church, castle building, and half-timbered houses offer different ways to explore the town through its architectural history.
Hiking through forests, past monuments and viewpoints
The “Legendary Femelwald” premium hiking trail starts at the Seitenbachtal hiking car park, near the leisure facility of the same name. The trail passes legendary natural monuments and historic small-scale monuments, and offers viewpoints at several points. At Teufelstein, you can read the legend and take a break. The route thus combines connections to nature and history with recurring viewpoints.
The Utschberg arboretum, which contains mainly non-native tree species, is also along the trail. From Landesstraße 1066, you can reach the arboretum via the entrance to the “Hummelbühl” residential area and Theodor-Heuss-Straße.
Another starting point for a different route is the Seitenbachtal forest car park: from there, a bird and forest nature trail of about four kilometres leads through the woods. At 38 kilometres, the Jubiläumsweg offers a considerably longer route option. It is laid out as a circular trail around Sulzbach an der Murr and divided into three sections. It was marked in 2020 to mark the 125th anniversary of the Sulzbach an der Murr branch of the Swabian Alb Association. Comparing the lengths helps you choose between these two trails based on the distance you want to cover.
Sulzbach an der Murr is also included in the Feenspuren network of hiking and walking trails. This offers different perspectives when choosing a route: a themed nature trail, a circular trail in three sections, and a premium hiking trail featuring natural monuments, historic small-scale monuments, and viewpoints.
Mountain biking on a larger trail network
The municipal mountain biking brochure presents routes around Oppenweiler, Aspach, Sulzbach an der Murr, and Spiegelberg. The trail network described in it covers a total of 141 kilometres and more than 3,500 metres of elevation gain. Both figures refer to the entire network in the brochure, not just Sulzbach an der Murr. This lets you consider the town’s cycling opportunities in the context of the other communities mentioned.
