Accommodation in Veľké Úľany
Veľké Úľany offers travelers several distinct points of interest: historic buildings and sites, as well as the Lotos Lake recreational area and its lake. Malá Kalvária, the churches, the Dom ľudového bývania, and the Kúria differ in age and architectural style; Lotos Lake adds a different focus. The river setting and a cycling route round out the description of the area. When planning, you can consider whether culture, landscape, or waterside recreation should shape your stay.
Landscape and cycling route
Veľké Úľany lies in the Podunajská nížina between the Čierna Voda and the Malý Dunaj. The Čierna Voda flows through the northern part of the municipality. The new cycling route runs away from the state road and is 4.89 km long in total; 2.299 km of it follows the protective embankment of the Čierna Voda waterway. The second figure therefore refers to a section of the overall route, not an additional distance.
Malá Kalvária and churches
Malá Kalvária is listed as a cultural monument under number 2522 in the Central List of National Cultural Monuments of the Slovak Republic. The site was built in 1740; its chapel, Sedem bolestnej Panny Márie, was built in 1756. The ensemble includes a pear-shaped atrium and statues of Panny Márie and sv. Jána evanjelistu, erected in 1759. It also features a stone cross from 1775 and chapels of the Stations of the Cross. The site thus brings together several construction phases and a range of architectural and religious elements.
The Roman Catholic Church of “Kostol sv. Michala archanjela” in Veľké Úľany was begun in 1594 in the Renaissance style and, according to available information, completed in 1670. The tower was built in 1718; side aisles were added after 1756. The Evangelical church has a different history: in 1958, at the initiative of Slovak immigrants, mainly from Dolná zem, an agricultural building belonging to the Pálffyho majera was converted into a church.
Kúria and Dom ľudového bývania
In the center of Veľké Úľany stands the Kúria, a Neoclassical building erected by Mikuláš Lacsný in 1828. It is single-storey, has an L-shaped floor plan, and features an open arcade in the courtyard area of the side wing. The style, floor plan, and location of the arcade describe different characteristics of the building.
The Dom ľudového bývania has a thatched roof, a courtyard, a draw well, and an enclosure dating from the mid-19th century. The building was constructed in 1910 and opened on July 1, 1991, following restoration; the exhibition was opened to the public in 1992. The building’s construction date, its reopening after restoration, and the opening of the exhibition can therefore be understood as distinct milestones in the house’s history.
Lotos Lake
Lotos Lake is a 3.5-hectare family recreation area with a 1.1-hectare lake. The figures refer to different areas: the entire recreation site and the lake within it. Facilities include a mini zoo, a children’s playground, and horse riding; fishing is also available. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check availability in advance.
The lake is home to eight fish species, including carp, crucian carp, grass carp, pike, and catfish, as well as other species. Lotos Lake is therefore a place for both recreational activities and enjoying the lake itself, with its described fish population. Together with its historic buildings, Veľké Úľany offers a range of themes to help you plan your stay.
