Matúškovo lies in the flat Podunajská nížina in southwestern Slovakia, near the Váh River. The Šárd stream flows through the town. The broad lowland forms the landscape setting, while the stream is an integral part of the townscape. The town’s history is reflected in its churches, monuments and a traditional folk-architecture house with an ethnographic exhibition. If you are looking for a hotel in Matúškovo, these different highlights can help you decide: sacred architecture, everyday culture or a cycling route each offer a different focus for a stay.

Churches with Different Architectural Histories

The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a Baroque-Classical building, constructed from 1781 to 1784 on the site of an older church. Among its art-historical details is an altarpiece depicting the Nativity of Mary, painted by Mór Than in 1871. The church also has a 19th-century Classical side altar and a pulpit with reliefs of the Evangelists. Its construction period and furnishings thus offer insights into different stages of its history.

The Evangelical church is also part of the townscape. It was designed by architect Ing. Vavrinec Perleczky and formally handed over in 1992. A comparison of the two churches therefore highlights different construction periods and denominations. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary also has its documented furnishings and older church building.

Historic Buildings and Monuments

Built in 1774, the rectory opposite the Roman Catholic church is the oldest building in Matúškovo. Its date predates the construction of the present-day Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. This places two specific dates in the town’s history in direct spatial relation to one another.

The stone folk statue of Saint Vendelín stands on the road towards Diakovce. Dating from the second half of the 19th century, it depicts the patron saint of domestic animals. On the village square stands the stone Holy Trinity column, commissioned by František Lenárt in 1851. The wayside shrine “Božia muka,” designated a cultural monument, dates from the first half of the 19th century. Its column chapel has an opening with a pointed-arch top and is crowned by a double cross. The statue, column and wayside shrine thus differ in both form and the dates recorded for them.

Folk Architecture and Everyday Culture

The protected Dom ľudového bývania was built in 1847 and is an example of traditional folk architecture in southwestern Slovakia. Its ethnographic exhibition opened to the public in 1984. It presents the way of life of the original population at the turn of the 20th century, as well as that of Slovaks who migrated from Dolná zem in 1947. Visitors can see richly decorated furniture, handwoven carpets and other objects from everyday life.

The house thus connects the history of a specific building with an exhibition about everyday life and migration. For visitors interested in folk architecture, it offers a different perspective from the churches and monuments: here, the focus is on the ways of life and objects on display.

Events and Cycling Route

The youth organization in Matúškovo regularly holds the traditional cultural event “Stretnutie hudobníkov” at the stadium. The Hodové oslavy in Matúškovo take place on September 8. If you want to plan your trip around one of these events, check the date in advance.

Cycling is another specific option to consider when planning your trip. The cycling route “Po stopách vodných mlynov,” also known as the “Galantský Cyklookruh,” passes through Matúškovo. It is 64 km long and numbered 2210. Before setting off, check whether the route is still continuous. The distance refers to the entire cycling route, making it a different planning scale from the cultural sites within the town. This can help you decide whether to focus your stay on Matúškovo itself or on the cycling route.
