Vozokany: Church Art, Monuments and MTB Route
Accommodation in Vozokany
Two themes are central to a trip to Vozokany: the 12.3-kilometre MTB leisure route 5221 and the history of the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, along with local monuments. If you are looking for a hotel, you can consider whether cycling, architecture or local memorial sites should play a larger part in your stay.
Cycling Route and Watercourse
Route 5221 – Stará Čierna Voda–Tomášikovo–Jahodná is a 12.3-kilometre, green-marked, easy MTB leisure route. Its surface alternates between asphalt, paved paths, and field and forest tracks. The route reaches Vozokany at the first footbridge over the Čierna Voda; it then continues along the edge of the village towards Tomášikovo and Jahodná. Its length, markings and surface provide practical details for planning your own ride. As route information can change, check the route status before setting out.
The Stará Čierna voda watercourse branches off below Čierna Voda and flows through Vozokany. It is a distinct landscape feature of the village, while Route 5221 follows a course over the footbridge and along the edge of the village.
The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary
The Baroque Roman Catholic Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built in 1718 as a larger chapel. A southern side aisle and a masonry tower were added in 1778; the tower replaced the original wooden one. A side aisle added in 1923, with its own entrance, is known locally as the “small church”. The nave and side aisle have cross vaults.
Two bronze bells, dating from 1922 and 1925, hang in the tower. The smaller one bears a relief of the Virgin Mary. A small organ was installed in the choir loft in 1888. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose; check access arrangements locally before visiting.
Beneath the church is the crypt, built in 1718. It is not currently accessible and contains three burials, including that of Captain György Ritter of Vozokany, who died in 1732.
Chapels and Monuments
The Roman Catholic Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk in the local cemetery was built in 1925 as a memorial to the victims of the First World War. A monument to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars commemorates the local heroes who lost their lives in both wars.
The dates associated with individual memorial sites also tell the story of their creation: the statue of the Holy Family was erected in 1908 by Nagy Ferencz and Nagy Anna. The Nagykereszt, or Great Cross, was created in 1909 by Tönköly Dávid and Klimek Anna; a statue of the Virgin Mary stands on its pedestal. The Család Tábor életfája, or Family Camp Tree of Life, was carved in 2013 by participants in a family camp under the direction of woodcarver Tibor Szatmár. The kopjafa beside the Catholic church was also erected under his direction, in 2014. It is a preserved local monument; check its condition before visiting.
Three other religious representations can be distinguished by their stated locations: a wayside statue of Saint Vendelín stands at the end of the village towards Tomášikovo, and a wayside statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands by the bridge. A statue of Saint Florian is located in the park in front of the church.
In Vozokany, Hody celebrations are held on the feast day of the church’s patron saint. Together with the church’s building history and the scattered memorial sites, this custom adds a recurring festive occasion to the local cultural history.
