Tomášikovo: Watermill, Pilgrimage and Nature
Accommodation in Tomášikovo
Tomášikovo offers travelers several distinct highlights: a historic watermill, religious buildings, a château complex and a protected natural area. There is also a park with paths and bridges, as well as opportunities for cycling and paddling. When planning a stay, it helps to distinguish between these themes: the history of the mill and its architecture offer a different focus from pilgrimage, nature or activities on the river.
Watermill and Building History
The watermill in Tomášikovo was built in 1893 by János Maticza. It has been preserved in its original condition, and all of its milling equipment is operational. Since 1982, the mill has been open to the public as a unique technical monument of traditional milling and has been managed by the Museum of Local History in Galanta.
The preserved technology makes the mill a special stop for travelers interested in historic working methods and technical monuments. Its date can also be put into context: it was built in 1893, while the history of Tomášikovo Castle goes back further. The castle and its farm buildings form a Baroque-Classical complex, probably built in the 1760s to plans by architects J. Thalherr and J. Fellner. The castle stands on older foundations dating from the 17th century. The dating of the complex is probable; the older foundations represent a distinct historical phase.
Religious Sites and Park
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Tomášikovo was built in 1801. The Lourdes Grotto also has its own history: according to its inscription, it was built in 1901; according to old sources, the stones were brought directly from Lourdes.
The park in Tomášikovo is a national cultural monument. A network of paths runs through the park, and small bridges allow visitors to cross the watercourses. Residents and visitors to the community use it for recreation. The paths and bridges provide a concrete sense of how the park is laid out; both its protected cultural status and its use for recreation are part of its character.
Natural Area Along the Little Danube
Tomášikovský presyp lies west of Tomášikovo on the left bank of the Little Danube. The 0.988-hectare area was protected as a natural monument in 1973. Protection focuses on typical communities of sand-loving and drought-tolerant plant and animal species along the edges of the area. Its location, size and conservation purpose define a clearly delineated natural attraction alongside the town’s architectural and cultural monuments.
Pilgrimage, Cycling and Paddling
The main pilgrimage to the Lourdes Grotto takes place on the Saturday closest to September 8. Currently, some pilgrims walk from Vozokany to Tomášikovo. The pilgrimage ends with a solemn Holy Mass at the grotto in Tomášikovo Cemetery. If you are traveling for the celebration, it is best to check the date for the relevant year in advance. This makes the pilgrimage a distinct seasonal focus when planning a trip.
For a cycling trip, Route 8247, “Starý Háj – Tomášikovo,” is one clearly described option: it is 3.9 kilometers long, marked in yellow and designated as an easy recreational mountain-biking route. It connects the “Po stopách vodných mlynov” circuit with the wooden watermill in Tomášikovo and the community. From the mill, it continues to the center of Tomášikovo, where it ends. Its length, markings and endpoint give the ride a clear framework; check current route conditions before setting out, as maintenance or surface conditions may change.
A trip on the Little Danube offers a different focus. Paddlers can stop at the wooden watermill during their journey or camp there. A trip that includes a stop at the mill site is also suitable for beginners and families. If you plan to camp there, observe the local rules. This gives you a choice between a named cycling route and a river experience with a possible stop at the mill as different ways to spend your free time.
