In Dolná Streda, cultural and historical sights meet park and landscape themes. The town’s history can be read most clearly at the Church of St James: its present building and the earlier church on the same site belong to different historical periods.

The Church of St James

The Roman Catholic Church of St James is one of the town’s sights. The present church was built in 1781 in the Baroque-Classical style. An early medieval church, mentioned as early as the beginning of the 14th century, stood on the same site. The early 14th century therefore marks the mention of the predecessor building, while 1781 is the year the present church was built. The Baroque-Classical style designation adds an art-historical classification of the building to this chronological context.

When exploring the town’s history, it is worth keeping the two dates distinct: they do not refer to two construction phases of the present church, but to the predecessor church and the existing building. Thus, an early medieval mention and a specific construction date from the 18th century stand side by side at this site.

The park and walks at Kostolné námestie

A hundred-year-old lime tree stands in the park at Kostolné námestie. The park offers visitors opportunities for walks and relaxation. Two distinct points of interest come together here: a remarkable tree as a connection to nature and a place expressly used for exercise and relaxation.

If you would like to make time outdoors part of your stay as well as exploring the building’s history, the park offers a different focus from the church. The lime tree gives the opportunities for walks and relaxation in the park a character of their own.

Another cultural monument

The statue of St John of Nepomuk is also one of Dolná Streda’s cultural points of interest. It is listed in Slovakia’s register of national cultural monuments. It adds a distinct monument to the focus on churches. If you are interested in cultural history, you can explore both the church’s architectural history and the statue as a registered monument.

Protected area and nature trail

Dolná Streda’s municipal protected area was designated for its ecological, aesthetic and landscape-shaping significance. The municipal ordinance came into force on 1 January 2024. The protected area includes part of the Kráľová Special Protection Area. This distinction is important for accuracy: the municipal protected area is not the same as the entire Special Protection Area.

A nature trail was created around OR Dolnostredské Skala as part of a project in cooperation with TTSK and the municipality of Dolná Streda. The trail also includes pavilions that serve as visitor rest facilities. Alongside the formal designation of the protected area, visitors can explore a constructed nature trail and its associated pavilions as further aspects of the nature and landscape theme.

The different themes suit different interests during a stay: the church offers an introduction to the town’s history and architecture, the park provides opportunities for walks and relaxation, and the protected area and nature trail broaden the perspective to include landscape and nature.
