Ostratice combines a long local history with traces of its religious, musical and industrial heritage. You can view the town from different historical perspectives when planning a trip: from medieval records of its name to buildings and cultural traditions.

History and Places of Remembrance

Veľké Ostratice already existed in the 12th century; in 1193, the place was mentioned under the name Strece. In Ostratice, a stone plaque dating from 1617 is considered evidence of the Šándorovci family’s ownership. A gravestone near the Church of Saints Peter and Paul is also considered evidence of this family’s ownership. Both references provide a tangible connection to the town’s history.

A statue of the Holy Trinity was erected in Ostratice in 1928. A bust dating from 1936 commemorates Jozef Kompánek, a nationally minded writer, teacher and priest. From 1872 to 1917, Kompánek was active in Veľké Ostratice as a publicist, historian and national revivalist. The statue and bust thus offer two different forms of commemoration from two different periods.

Church and Architectural History

The Roman Catholic church in Veľké Ostratice dates from 1737 and is now dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. The parish and church probably already existed before 1332; the earlier church was dedicated to Saint Oswald. The early parish history, the former dedication and the church’s current patronage therefore belong to different historical periods in the town’s history.

The architecture offers further points of interest: the church has a relatively large square chancel and a two-storey annex on its south side. These features add a specific description of the building to its historical context.

Brass Band Music and Cultural Tradition

The Ostratice Brass Band Festival has been held in the municipality since the late 1980s. It takes place in the municipal park and features regional brass bands as well as a guest musician. If you would like to plan your trip around this cultural event, check the announced dates.

The Ostratičanka brass band was active during the Second World War and, according to the municipal website, had continued without interruption as of the update on 9 July 2025. The brass band in the former Veľké Ostratice was founded at the initiative of Senator Ján Podoba and the local parish administrator, Jozef Kompánek. Together, the festival, the band’s history and the accounts of its founding offer insights into different aspects of the local musical tradition.

Landscape and the Electric Mill

Ostratice lies amid the Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina, a loess hill landscape, and on the left floodplain of the Bebrava. Both the hills and the river floodplain are relevant to the area’s geographical setting. Fruit growing is also part of the town’s character: apples and fruit trees or fruit plants for planting are among the main crops.

The electric mill in Veľké Ostratice offers another way to explore the town’s history. Gustáv and Jozef Oláhovci, who came from Ostratice, built it in 1934. It was the first electric mill in the surrounding area and continued a longer tradition of water mills. The fully preserved, elongated three-storey building has a gabled roof; much of its original interior equipment has been preserved to this day. The mill is part of the village’s streetscape. Its technological history adds a distinct perspective on the development of local production to the church and cultural themes.
