Kolačno lies in the northern part of the Tríbeč Mountains, where they meet the Hornonitrianska kotlina. If you are looking for a hotel in Kolačno, you can get a sense of the place through its landscape, buildings and local history. Its natural features range from wooded areas to two named wetlands, while its cultural landmarks tell a story that stretches from the first written mention in the Middle Ages to exhibitions at the municipal museum.

Landscape and Wetlands in Kolačno

The Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area covers part of the municipality. Protection level II applies there. It protects preserved forest complexes on the Veľký Vracov and Michalov vrch hills, as well as distinctive landforms and relief features and remnants of heat-loving flora. The wooded parts of Kolačno include hornbeam, oak, oak-beech and high-quality coniferous forests. This brings together different forest types and landscape features, rather than describing the place solely in terms of woodland in general.

The distinct natural features include the locally designated wetlands “Rybník s lužným lesom pri Kolačne” and Mišove jarky. The first covers 70,000 square metres, and the second 53,000 square metres. The comparison is clear: Rybník s lužným lesom pri Kolačne is larger in area. Both names refer to wetlands in Kolačno and add clearly identifiable places and area figures to the landscape description.

Local History, Church and Municipal Museum

The first written mention of Kolačno dates to 1 June 1293, when the place appears as “terra Kolechna”. The interpretation of its name also points to the past: Kolačno is linked to the medieval dialect word “kolešňa”. It referred to a place away from the mother settlement, with temporary haystacks and animal enclosures. This linguistic explanation remains a historical interpretation, not a definite statement about the place as it is today.

Among the notable buildings is the reconstructed Roman Catholic Church of St Joseph the Worker. Another distinct historical landmark is Kolačno’s first chapel, consecrated on 19 March 1912. The municipal museum offers further insights into local life: exhibits include a living room from the 1920s, a historic fire engine, tools for producing and processing flax, and wedding clothes. The exhibits cover everything from home life and firefighting to crafts and clothing. Visits to the museum are possible by prior arrangement; please arrange your visit before travelling.

In the Ondrášová district stands a memorial to those who fell in the Slovak National Uprising, erected in 1973. It complements the historical themes of the museum and church with a memorial site whose purpose and year of construction are clearly specified.

Leisure, Events and Destinations at Vrchhora

Kolačno’s multipurpose sports court, with artificial turf, is intended for recreational sports such as tennis, volleyball, mini-football, basketball, streetball, nohejbal and badminton. The selection includes ball games and racket sports, giving you a specific idea of which sports are listed for the court without implying any particular use or availability.
