Bošany – Castles and Sacred Architecture
Accommodation in Bošany
There are different ways to shape a stay in Bošany: visit the Church of Saint Martin the Bishop and other chapels, explore the castles, or take a cycling loop through several towns. The town’s history connects the first mention of an original church in 1332 with buildings from the 18th century. A regularly held fair may also be a consideration when planning your trip. When looking for a hotel, consider whether architectural history, religious architecture, or a cycling tour will define your stay.
Church and Chapels
The original Church of Saint Martin the Bishop in Bošany is first mentioned in 1332. The late Baroque church building was completed in 1776. It has a single nave and an integrated tower. “Single-nave” describes a building with one nave; the tower is incorporated into the structure. The church also has an altarpiece of Saint Martin dating from 1776.
Another phase of construction is represented by the upper chapel, built in 1725 at the suggestion of Mikuláš Bošáni. Services are held there during Marian feasts. The Red Chapel has its own collection of religious images: it contains an image of the Virgin Mary, a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, and a cross. In the past, it was used on procession days and on days of prayer for the harvest. Visiting the chapels therefore offers a chance to distinguish between the upper chapel’s present-day use during Marian feasts and the Red Chapel’s former function.
Two Castles and a Park with a Pond
The old Renaissance castle of the Bossányiovci family is located right in the center of Bošany. Its fortified grounds included polygonal bastions and a surrounding moat. It should be distinguished from the Baroque-Classicist castle, built in 1776 by Ignác Bošáni and his wife Terézia. Its façades have been authentically preserved, and the interior is in good condition. A new park with a pond was created beside this castle on the grounds of the former park.
The municipal website, updated on March 20, 2025, reported that the Renaissance castle was then undergoing extensive reconstruction for its intended use as a conference center. If you are planning to visit the interior, check access arrangements in advance. The municipal description identifies the preserved Baroque-Classicist castle as privately owned and used for cultural and social purposes; ownership and use arrangements may change. These two notes relate to different castles and can help you distinguish between the buildings when planning your trip.
Statues and Local Events
The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk still stands in front of the municipal office in Bošany; it was restored in 2001. There is also a Baroque statue of Saint Florian in front of the Bossányiovci family castle in the center. The two locations connect the sculptures with local civic and historic buildings, without confusing them with the chapels or the history of the church’s construction.
The Bošiansky jarmok is one of the events regularly held in Bošany. If you would like to plan your trip around the fair, check in advance when it takes place during your travel dates. This lets you plan around the actual event dates without assuming a specific date or that it takes place every year.
Bošany by Bike
A cycling loop runs from Partizánske through Brodzany, Krásno, Nedanovce, Bošany, Chynorany, and Žabokreky nad Nitrou, returning to Partizánske. The Partizánske–Bošany–Chynorany–Žabokreky nad Nitrou cycling loop is suitable for different types of bicycles. When choosing your travel dates, you can weigh two different interests: the castles, church, and chapels are the focus for architectural and religious history, while the cycling loop connects Bošany with several other places along the route. A short stay focused on culture and a trip centered on cycling therefore call for different planning priorities.
