Accommodation in Veľké Kršteňany
The history of Veľké Kršteňany includes a Neolithic settlement and the Pavol Gašparovič Hlbina Memorial Room, which opened in 2008. It also includes the history of the Chapel of Saint Catherine, a branch church dating from 2002 and a regional cycling route that passes through the village.
History and local architectural styles
A Neolithic settlement has been archaeologically documented in the territory of Veľké Kršteňany. The village’s historic local architecture also tells the story of its development: it was shaped by an irregular settlement pattern following the stream and farmhouses built of unfired bricks. The former concerns the layout of the settlement, while the latter refers to the building material used for the houses.
The Pavol Gašparovič Hlbina Memorial Room opened on 18 May 2008 in the former state elementary school building. Another memorial site with a specific date is the Medzicesty stone cross in the cadastral area of Veľké Kršteňany: it was blessed on 2 February 1930.
Chapel and church history
Regular Sunday services were held in the Chapel of Saint Catherine until the new church was built. Today, worshippers still gather in the chapel for services on the feast day of Saint Catherine. Thus, the earlier regular Sunday services and the feast-day services belong to different periods.
Another church landmark is the branch church Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Veľké Kršteňany, which dates from 2002. Taken together, the chapel and branch church point to different moments in the local history of the church: the chapel’s earlier use, services on the feast day of Saint Catherine, and a church building from the 21st century.
Cycling route through Veľké Kršteňany
The blue-marked regional circular route Bojnice Cycling Circuit (route 2308) passes through Veľké Kršteňany. The full circuit is 162 kilometres long and can be completed in two days. This time estimate applies to the entire circuit, not to the section through the village. If you are planning to ride the route, check the current course and signage before setting out, as the route or markings may change.
Geology, poetry and traditional dishes
A geological site is located in the Horná Nitra region near Veľké Kršteňany. Marine microorganisms and rock strata have been used there to reconstruct the development of ancient seas in the Carpathian region over a period of more than 25 million years.
Poetry is also part of the region’s cultural history. The event Hlbinove Kršteňany was established in October 2008. It combines a regional Slovak poetry festival with a competition in the artistic recitation of poems.
Traditional foods add another dimension to these themes of historical local cuisine. Common traditional dishes included halušky, plum dumplings, perky filled with plum butter, and šúľance with poppy seeds. Together with the dated cultural sites and poetry event, they create a picture of the village that brings architectural history, religious traditions and culinary heritage side by side.
