Žabokreky Nad Nitrou: Heritage and Hotels
Accommodation in Žabokreky Nad Nitrou
Žabokreky Nad Nitrou combines architectural and local history with guided farm visits, beer and cycling. The Church of Our Lady, a fortified manor house and a mausoleum represent different chapters in the town’s history; at the same time, the Hornonitrianska (Ponitrianska) Cycling Route passes through the town. This gives you a choice of heritage, farm experiences and cycling activities when planning your trip.
Church, Manor House and Mausoleum
Archaeological finds show that the present-day area was inhabited as early as the Stone Age. Settlement in Žabokreky Nad Nitrou is also documented in the 7th and 8th centuries. During the Great Moravian period, local blacksmiths made complete sets of agricultural tools. These traces lead from early settlements to a specific craft practiced by the Great Moravians.
The Church of Our Lady was built in 1913 in the Secession style. It replaced a Romanesque church from the 13th century that had been demolished. The single-nave building has a polygonal presbytery and side chapels. Renaissance and Neo-Romanesque elements are incorporated into the Secession design; the interior furnishings date from the time of construction. After the church was built, the village square, where livestock markets were held, was redesigned.
The fortified manor house was originally a Gothic watchtower built around 1320 and was converted into a residence in the 20th century. Two phases of earth fortifications can be distinguished here: approximately from the 11th to the 13th century and from the 14th to the 16th century. The western section of the outer fortification, including its moat, survives. The manor house’s history thus encompasses both its earlier role as a watchtower and the later fortifications.
The Žabokreky Nad Nitrou Mausoleum is a Secession monument built at the beginning of the 20th century and inspired by Oriental architecture. Its architecture and interior furnishings have been authentically preserved. An access path branching off from the main path leads through an original avenue of yew trees to the mausoleum.
Farm Visits, Beer and Seasonal Offerings
Farma u Ďurkových offers guided tours where visitors can see the farm’s animals. Farm tours are organized for groups of eight or more; ask about booking conditions in advance. Every summer, the farm also runs a one-day holiday camp. Children learn about animal care and sustainable living and take part in creative activities. Ask whether the holiday camp is available in your chosen year.
Beer is also part of U Ďurkových’s offerings: a brewery tour ends with a beer tasting, and the bistro features a wide selection of home-brewed beers. Farma u Ďurkových produces unfiltered and unpasteurized beer. A seasonal café has a green terrace overlooking the farm. Check whether the café is open at the time of your visit.
Cycling Route and the Žabokreky Tour
The 66-kilometer Hornonitrianska (Ponitrianska) Cycling Route passes through Bojnice, Nováky and Partizánske before reaching Žabokreky Nad Nitrou. This makes the town a clear point of reference for route planning: it is named as a destination section of this cycling route.
The Žabokreky Tour is an annual cycling event. Its program includes a 1,200-meter children’s route, followed by children’s attractions. The 2026 regulations describe the tour as non-competitive: times are not recorded and rankings are not compiled.
