Nové Mesto nad Váhom District: Castles, Museums and Nature
Accommodation in Nové Mesto nad Váhom District
Nové Mesto nad Váhom District combines castle ruins and historic churches with museums, striking natural features and seasonal leisure activities. Your trip can focus on architectural history, views or outdoor activities. Some of the places described offer very different themes, from interactive exhibitions to trails with specific walking-time estimates.
Castles, a Church and Regional History
The ruins of Beckov Castle stand in Beckov on a steep, 60-metre-high rock near the Váh. After a fire in 1728, the castle fell into ruin. Tematín Castle is also a romantic ruin visible from afar. It is located on a ridge of the Považský Inovec and once served as an important signal castle. From there, views extend to the Považský Inovec, the Podunajská nížina, the Little Carpathians, the Myjavská pahorkatina and the White Carpathians. Which of these landscapes are visible depends on the weather.
In Nové Mesto nad Váhom, the fortified Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary tells the story of several building phases. Its origins date back to the mid-13th century. Between 1414 and 1423, it was remodelled as an octagonal Gothic structure. Later, between 1667 and 1675, inserted partition arcades transformed the Gothic nave into a Baroque three-aisled church. Those interested in architectural history can distinguish the different periods in this building.
The museums also cover a range of themes. The interactive exhibitions in the Draškovič Mansion explore the history of Čachtice, Countess Alžbeta Báthoryová, Haban pottery, Roma history, the Tatrín association, the noble families of Čachtice and the furnishings of aristocratic residences. The Podjavorinské Museum combines archaeology, history and ethnography with the history of craft guilds in Nové Mesto and the surrounding area, as well as the region’s ecclesiastical history. In Stará Turá, the “Tradičné bývanie” exhibition presents antique furniture, local folk costumes, historic religious books and household items from everyday life in the past.
Nature, Views and Trails
The Haluzická tiesňava in Haluzice is a protected natural monument and also a technical feature, formed by erosion caused by the Haluzický potok. The gorge has been protected since 1963; it is now subject to the fourth level of protection. A forest educational trail was created through the tiesňava in 2012. Its formation through erosion and its protected status give the place a natural-history and technical dimension alongside its scenery.
Two approaches to Tematín Castle are described, with different approximate walking times: from the recreational area below Bezovec, a blue-marked trail leads to the castle in about 1 hour 30 minutes; from Lúka, another blue-marked trail takes about 2 hours 15 minutes. Walking times are estimates; trail conditions may vary. The entrance to Čachtické podzemie is about a seven-minute walk from the village square. There is no parking on the narrow dead-end road leading to the entrance; local conditions may change.
For a different view of the region, the Hájnica lookout tower offers panoramas of the Bošácka dolina, the White Carpathians and the surrounding kopanice settlements. The ruins of the 13th-century Romanesque church in Haluzice also offer views over the Bošácka dolina. Those who prefer to see natural features up close can visit Štúrova skala near Stará Turá, a natural rock outcrop rising from a wooded slope near the Dubník reservoir. The site is used for recreation; it has an easy ascent and a practice area for climbers.
Seasonal Leisure and Regional Specialties
The Dubník recreational area consists of the two reservoirs Dubník I and Dubník II, also known as the new and old Dubník. During the summer season, Dubník I in particular offers opportunities for swimming, renting boats and pedal boats, playing tennis and table tennis, and fishing. Seasonal activities may change; check them before making plans. Windsurfing is offered at the Zelená voda recreational area, although seasonal availability may vary.
Zelená voda is 2 km from Nové Mesto nad Váhom and can be reached from the D1 motorway, as well as by car, bus, bicycle, inline skates or on foot. As transport services may change, it is advisable to check the best route before travelling. For cyclists, the 13.4 km Horná Streda–Nové Mesto nad Váhom recreational cycling route connects Horná Streda, Brunovce, Potvorice and Považany with Nové Mesto nad Váhom. It is suitable for all ages, including children, and can also be used with inline skates.
Bošácka slivovica, a regional specialty, represents the traditional fruit brandy-making tradition of Bošáca.
