Discover Modrová: Nature, Cave and Culture
Accommodation in Modrová
Modrová offers a range of subjects, from protected habitats and a mineral spring to cycling, cave geology and church architecture. For planning your trip, these interests can be considered separately: Kňaží vrch represents a special natural area, the green MTB route 5213 is a specifically named route, and the church and cave each have their own geological or architectural details.
Natural Area and Mineral Spring
The Kňaží vrch Nature Reserve protects thermophilous oak forests with downy oaks (Quercus pubescens). Together with the treeless rocks, they provide a habitat for xerothermic flora and fauna in the Považský Inovec. Carpathian species are also found on the northern slopes. The nature reserve is part of the Tematínske vrchy Site of European Importance. Xerothermic refers to habitats and species adapted to warm and dry conditions; the term describes the ecological importance of this natural area. If you visit the protected area, observe the restrictions in force there.
The Kyselka mineral spring is located in the Kalište recreation area in Modrová. If you would like to drink its water, check both the condition of the spring and the water quality on site. This way, you take both important conditions into account before consuming the water.
Mountain Biking
The green MTB route 5213 runs from Hubina via Gonove Lazy to Horáreň Modrová and passes mostly through forest terrain. At its end, it connects to the red route 020, “Naprieč Považským Inovcom,” through the Považský Inovec. This identifies both the course of the green route and its connection to the red route. Check the route and connection before setting out; forest or trail conditions may affect the route.
Modrovská Cave: Geology and Access
Modrovská Cave is the largest cave in the Považský Inovec. Its entrance is on the northwestern slope of the Grnica massif at an altitude of 523 m. Its distinctive features include pisolitic sinter formations in a variety of bush-like shapes that resemble underwater corals. This geological feature is separate from the question of access: the cave is closed to the general public. Visits are possible only when accompanied by members of the Inovec caving group. If you are planning a visit, check this access requirement again beforehand.
Church of St. Michael the Archangel
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Modrová is listed in the Central Register of the Slovak Monuments Fund under number 1253/0. Its presbytery stands on square foundations and has a barrel vault. A small sacristy is connected to the chancel by a flat Gothic trefoil portal. It has one narrow Romanesque and one narrow Gothic window; each is only 10 to 15 cm wide. The architecture thus combines different elements: the Gothic portal and window, as well as the Romanesque window, are part of the design described, along with the vaulted presbytery.
