Čalovec lies on Žitný ostrov in a distinctly flat lowland landscape; the protected Čalovecké rašelinisko area is located within the municipality. At the same time, the history of the settlement stretches far back and includes archaeological evidence, buildings and memorial sites from different periods. Those who want to combine nature and history on their trip will find a range of topics here to help plan their stay. Because of its location, the municipal area has often been exposed to flooding.

Flat Landscape and Protected Nature

The protected Čalovecké rašelinisko area is located within the municipality of Čalovec. Dropie is another place of natural interest: the site lies in the Ostrovné lúky Bird Protection Area, a typical lowland landscape used for agriculture. Its landscape features include meadows, pastures and wetlands, as well as meanders lined with pollard willows. These features give the surroundings a distinct character, while the flat landscape remains unmistakably a lowland environment.

In the Čalovec Lúky area of Dropie, there is an original “tanya” that serves as an information centre, a reed pavilion and an activity area. The “Príbeh krajiny” educational trail also runs through the visitor area. Visitors to Dropie can therefore follow a specific trail and use several named facilities in the visitor area to find their way around. The facilities and the educational trail are located in the agriculturally shaped lowland landscape of the Ostrovné lúky Bird Protection Area.

Archaeological Traces and Local History

The municipal area includes an important archaeological site with evidence from several periods. This includes a burial urn cemetery and settlement of the North Pannonian culture from the Early Bronze Age, a Celtic burial ground and a Roman-Barbarian settlement. There is also a Slavic-Avar burial ground and a Slavic settlement from the time of the Great Moravian Empire. The area is considered to have been continuously inhabited since the Early Bronze Age. Čalovec itself is first mentioned in 1268 in a boundary charter of Komárno Castle.

Buildings and Memorial Sites

The history of local architecture can also be traced through specific dates. The Reformed Church was originally built as a Neoclassical church in 1801–1802 and was remodelled and given a Romantic style between 1870 and 1877. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The Evangelical prayer house in Čalovec was completed in 1975. The two buildings represent different periods in the local history of religion and architecture.

The memorial sites include two monuments to victims of war. The monument to the victims of the First World War dates from 1931 and was created by the sculptor Gyula Berecz of Komárno. The monument to the victims of the Second World War was created in 1998 by the sculptor János Nagy. The historic railway station building has also been preserved: it is a single-storey rectangular structure with gabled side façades. The history of the Komárno–Kolárovo railway line includes its opening on 8 November 1914; Čalovec was the line’s central station.

A Seasonal Option for Planning Your Trip

The Letné kúpalisko adds an outdoor swimming pool open during the season to the nature and history attractions. It has one pool, a recirculation system and solar-heated water, and can accommodate 300 people. If the pool is important to your trip plans, confirm its scheduled operating period in advance. When looking for a hotel in Čalovec, you can then decide whether nature, local history or seasonal swimming is most important for your trip.
