Martovce: Birdlife, river landscape and culture
Accommodation in Martovce
During a stay in Martovce, you can focus on nature, local history or outdoor activities. This lets you plan your trip around what interests you most—birdlife and wetlands, rural culture, or getting around on the water and by bike.
Birdlife and wetlands
Alúvium Žitavy is a protected area upstream of the confluence of the Žitava. Willows and reeds define the landscape; around 76 bird species live there, most of them rare. The area offers a clear connection with nature for anyone interested in birdlife and river landscapes when choosing a travel destination.
In the Gémeš area, willow and poplar forests lie among fields. They are frequently flooded and often remain underwater throughout the summer. Gémeš also includes species-rich marshes where grey herons and purple herons can be found. Here, the natural landscape ranges from wooded areas to water-based habitats.
Rural architecture and local traditions
The heritage-listed Roľnícky dom was built in 1871 by István Nagy from a mixture of clay and straw, using a local wattle-building technique. Since 1975, it has housed an exhibition on rural domestic culture. The rooms are furnished with original painted furniture from Martovce dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors can access Roľnícky dom as part of the Museum of Hungarian Culture and the Danube Region in Komárno.
Local dress and customs also offer insight into the cultural history of Martovce. The traditional folk costume is considered unique because there is no comparable costume in the surrounding area. A historical spring-welcoming custom brought young people together on the shore of Lake Horváth to sing and dance during Lent before Easter. The so-called Candle Dance is considered Martovce’s most typical and remarkable wedding custom.
The Celoštátne turičné folklórne slávnosti are held every year at Árpád-Feszty Cultural Park. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the event date in advance.
Rope course, forest trail and boat trips
Martovce has a nine-metre-high rope course with various obstacles and several difficulty levels. A lower rope park, 40 centimetres above the ground, is available for younger visitors. Reservations may be required.
The Lesný náučný chodník runs through a picturesque 600-metre-long forest area around a rope park. Along the trail, there is a pergola where families and cyclists can rest during walks and bike rides. Play equipment and rope courses add to what is on offer; an outdoor oven is also available for roasting food. As facilities may change, check which amenities are available before your visit.
Boat trips, boat rentals and guided water tours are available on the Stará Nitra. If you are planning a tour, please note the provider’s reservation requirements. These activities on the water add another way to spend your time in Martovce alongside the town’s nature and cultural attractions.
Cycling route and sports
A 35-kilometre cycling route, considered suitable for families, runs from Komárno via Lándor along the Stará Nitra to Martovce. It then switches to the eastern bank of the Žitava and leads back to Komárno via Lándor. The route connects several clearly named sections and places. As surfaces and route conditions may change, check both before setting out.
Martovce has a multi-purpose sports ground with artificial turf for football, volleyball and tennis. It is also lit for evening sports. When planning, you can choose between cycling, outdoor exercise and activities on the water.
