Kravany nad Dunajom combines architectural history with a location in the Danube Lowland. Late Romanesque and Baroque phases at the church, manor houses and memorial sites provide tangible connections to the village’s history. At the same time, the low Danube levee, a floodplain in the southern part of the municipal area and the seasonal use of the Danube riverbank are all part of the village’s character. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Kravany nad Dunajom, you can first consider whether you would like to focus primarily on the buildings or the landscape.

Church from the Late Romanesque and Baroque periods

The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built around 1232 as a Late Romanesque church. Around 1712, Count Ferenc Gyulay had it renovated and remodelled in the Baroque style; in 1936, it was restored to its Baroque appearance. The building’s history therefore encompasses several clearly distinct phases: its Late Romanesque origins and its later Baroque remodelling. Anyone interested in historic architecture will find a place where this sequence can be traced through specific dates.

The church has two red marble tomb slabs. One bears an inscription with the name of the noble de Lábathlan family and the date 1400. Alongside the building’s history, this detail adds another point of reference over time. It also makes the church interesting to travellers who pay attention not only to architectural styles during a visit, but also to historic inscriptions and memorial objects.

Manor houses and memorial sites

Kravany nad Dunajom is also known as the “village of manor houses” because aristocratic families built many manor houses and country estates there. One example is the village’s largest manor house by volume, located beside the Hroššo estate. Sándor Braun and Józsa Hazai had it built in the last quarter of the 19th century. After Gustáv Láng acquired the property in 1917, he had the building remodelled and unified in the Art Nouveau style. The construction period and later alterations can be viewed as two parts of the history of this house.

A stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on the Danube riverbank opposite the estate of the Kuzmik family. It was erected in 1843, restored in 1902 and placed on a marble pedestal. At the western end of the village, in the direction of Dunamocs, there is also a wayside shrine that locals call the Láng Chapel. It dates from the 1920s; a picture of the Virgin Mary can be seen in its barred niche.

Another chapel in Kravany nad Dunajom commemorates a former Lourdes grotto. A local family had the grotto built in gratitude for their son’s recovery. This story adds a local religious memory to the architectural landmarks. Manor houses, wayside shrines and chapels thus lead to different aspects of the village’s history, which is not confined to a single era.

The Danube levee, floodplain landscape and summer by the riverbank

Kravany nad Dunajom is located in the Danube Lowland on a low levee along the left bank of the Danube. The southern part of the municipal area is a floodplain with oxbow lakes, riverbanks and floodplain forest. This spatial distinction is important for understanding the landscape: the description of the floodplain refers to the southern part of the municipality, while the Danube levee characterises the village’s location.

An observation tower in Kravany nad Dunajom offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. If you plan to visit it, check the visiting conditions in advance. In summer, you can swim or sunbathe by the Danube; this is a seasonal option. Before swimming, it is advisable to check the conditions. The views and summer use of the riverbank appeal to different interests than the historic buildings.

You can choose a specific focus for your trip: the church, manor house and memorial sites offer insights into architectural and local history, while the Danube levee, floodplain and riverbank are all about the landscape. Choose your destination based on your interests, then look for a hotel for your stay.
